Theron Jeppson, communicable disease health educator for the health department, said officials would like to prevent the spread of the parasite, which spreads through fecal matter and can cause diarrhea. The parasite can be especially dangerous for the young and elderly and those with compromised immune systems, and the resulting dehydration could result in hospitalization. "Most of the behavioral mes- sages that we're putting out come from past outbreaks and what we've learned about how the disease is spread," he said. Cathy Smits, aquatic supervisor for Provo City, said the wording of "cleansing showers" is an important factor in addressing the Cryptosporidium outbreak. Smits said she was part of a group formed with pool operators and health officials to come up with ways to combat the parasite, Although a lack of showering may not have been the cause for the widespread outbreak in the state, Smits said it is important for hygiene rules to be enforced at pools. "After the past year, we felt it would be a good idea to go back to the true meaning of showering," she said. Smits said several measures are being taken in Provo along with the new rules to promote pool safety. Children will be taught safe swimming practices in their swimming lessons, and pool staff will also be . Although swim diapers and waterproof swim pants can help to stop the spread of the parasite, Jeppson said health officials spelled out rules for those with diarrhea to ensure that the diapers do not give parents a false sense of security. "They're better than regular diapers, but the reality is if someone has diarrhea, they are not going to hold it in," he said. Jeppson said educational materials are being sent to pools with the message that diapers Certain are not a "cure-all.- " measures can help to prevent :. said. an outbreak, and good hygiene . r This year, officials hope must also be practiced, to confront the problem by rr The new rules also require swimmers to take a "cleansbanning swimmers who have diarrhea or have had it in the ing shower" before jumping in two weeks prior to swimming. the pool, which is defined as a Jeppson said one of the causes shower using soap and water. of the outbreak in 2007 may Jeppson said this rule, as well have been that people did not . as requiring parents to wash their hands and diapered child know that they should hot A3 " trained with ways to disinfect pools after a fecal accident. While new rules will be enacted this year, Smits said swimmers will not be restricted, they will just learn to be healthier in pools. Smits said ultraviolet systems are also being installed in the Provo pool, a system which would kill the parasite with ultraviolet rays as the water enters the pool. Seven Peaks and Orem city .: pools are also getting the UV systems. Along with strict cleansing requirements, officials will also require pools to follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when cleaning up fecal matter in the pool. Local health directors will also enact a Cryptosporidiosis Watch or Warning when it appears people have been infected by the parasite, or when rates of infection rise higher than expected. Pools will also be required to report when and where fecal matter was discovered. Lance Madigan, spokesman for the Utah County Health Department, said measures can be taken to improve pool safety, but good hygiene and knowing when to stay out of the pool are paramount. Ultraviolet systems are excellent tools, but it takes a long time to clean 100,000 gallons of water, and a sick person in the pool " can contaminate the water once it is clean. "If people are coming to the pool sick, the UV or ozone systems won't be the magic &. bullet," he said. Madigan said the public will need to buy in to the rules and .fully cooperate for the mea- sures to be effective. The most important .measure of prevention is keeping sick people out of the pool, he said. ' . . Jeppson said the goal of the new rules is to help keep the public safe; not to scare swimmers. He hopes the new regulations will help people to avoid getting sick and spreading the parasite from pool to pool. "What we want people to. do is learn they can still swim, they can be safe, they just need to follow some guidelines," he said. The new rules are now in a cofhment period, in which time the public may view the rules and make comments online. Jeppson said the goal is to 30-da- y review the comments and have official rules in place at the start of the swimming season, Memorial Day.
