At Slate Canyon Youth Center, a detention center in Provo, the Boys & Girls Club has started two programs called "Youth for Unity" and "Smart Moves." These programs are set up to help these youth overcome problems that may have got them there in the first place. : The Boys 7- f 3k : i . I- - f 'i , - I & 7 Valarie Clove, who works for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County, started the "Youth for Unity" and "Smart Moves" programs this last year. She described one particular session as starting off kind of "rocky." In this "rocky" session they were discussing about caring and making a difference in the world. They were listening to music and discussing the lyrics of one particular song entitled "If Everyone Cared" by Nickelback which caused one of the youth, that Valarie had particular trouble with, to express that he hated EVERYONE. He made his feelings very clear and there were many grunts of agreementfrom the other youth in the session. J Clove moved on quickly and started talking about random acts of kindness. The same youth that said that he hated everyone told a story about how he helped an old lady change her flat tire. He said she even offered him $50 but he didn't take it. Clove asked him why he didn't take it and the boy replied that "it just didn't feel right." Clove then replied to the young man, "And this is coming from the guy who says he hates everyone?!" I f ! v. v This event had changed the young man. Clove said that he was a completely different person after that. He would help out, be involved and was very positive during the sessions. These are the kind of successes the Boys & Girls Club is seeing. It is because of the wonderful staff at the Boys & Girls Club and the generous donations from the One Campaign that these programs are even made possible. Through the funds of the donors from the One Campaign, the Boys & Girls Club was' able tp fund this program and many others that are " changing lives every day. We thank all the hard working staff and the many generous donors that make these pro- grams possible and ask for your continual sup-- " port this year. j f i "The same youth that said he hates everyone told a story about how he helped an old lady change her flat tire. He said she even offered him $50 but he didn't take it. "Why? asked. It just didn't feel right, he said. So I said, "And this is coming from the guy who says he hates everyone?!?! That's not hate. You care. You didn't even know her and you cared!" had a different kid after that.
