While Utah Valley Weather history has some pretty cold temperatures at in recent years, you have to go back to February of 1989 and December of 1990 to find a major arctic outbreak with readings well below zero. In February of 1989, a snowstorm from Feb. 2 through 4 deposited 26.5 inches of snowfall on Provo. The maximum depth on the ground was 26 inches on the 4th. This storm ; was followed by an arctic outbreak of very cold air. There were 4 days when low temperatures dropped below zero with the coldest at minus 20 degrees on the 6th. In December of 1990, a storm on the 19th and 20th deposited 11 inches of snowfall in Provo. Temperatures proceeded to fall to the basement following that storm as 8 of the next 11 mornings saw subzero temperatures. The coldest was minus 16 on the 23rd. The last below zero reading at BYU was minus 3 on Jan. 16,2007. Feb. 8: In 1985, winds topped 105 mph atop Angle Station at Park City. The west side of the Salt Lake Valley became a parking lot as cars became stranded in snowdrifts.
