Whenever a "file" was associated with the name, I wrote the name of the person and the file number on a form. The workers took the form to a back room and entered all the information onto two cds for me. Some of the files were 80 pages long! Those names not associated with a file often had other kinds of information available. Please remember the database in the Land and Records Center covers only people who lived or traveled in and around Nauvoo from about 1838 to about 1850. The Family History Center, another red brick building, on Knight Street, has the same database, called the Nauvoo Data Bank, but it covers a wider scope of names, dates and places. This information is 10 cents per copy. In addition, the Family History Center provides access to many of the same records found in other such centers. Upstairs in the Seventies Halt still another red brick building, also on Parley Street, is a Seventies Index where the entries can be copied by hand. Why look at these records when they are included in both the Land and Records Database and the Nauvoo Data Bank? Because these Seventies records cover a much broader period of time than the other indexes. The entire grounds of the Nauvoo historical district are one big archive. The juxtaposition of databases with historical activities, buildings and antiques makes for a powerful experience in the bend of the Mississippi I LaRae Free Kerr can be reached at itsallrelativessfcn.org. |
