The owners will meet in Nashville on Tuesday to award the 20 1 1 Super Bowl, and also will talk about decreasing the 15 minutes allowed for each first round draft choice. In the second round, teams are allowed 10 minutes and that also could be diminished. But league spokesman Greg Aiello said no decision is expected in Nashville. The NFL's competition committee has been studying the issue since last month's draft, in which the first round took a record 6 hours, 8 minutes. The entire first day, consisting of three rounds, lasted more than 11 hours, also a record. After the draft, the first one conductedhy Goodell as commissioner, he spoke to members of the competition committee about shortening the proceedings. There also has been speculation that the draft could be moved from New York City on a rotation basis, and that the first round could wind up on a Friday night as prime-tim- e programming for NFL Network and ESPN, both of which televise the en- Detroit at Chicago, Game 6 6 p.m. Hank Aaron will take on an inNEW YORK creased role with the Atlanta Braves following the team's sale Wednesday from Time Warner Inc. to Liberty Media Corp. The deal, which Braves chairman Terry McGuirk said values the franchise at $450 million, was unanimously approved by baseball owners at a special meeting called Wednesday night to beat a midnight change in tax laws. The companies were set to transfer the team later in the evening. "Hank Aaron is going be a critical part of all this. It was very important to me, and I know it's very important to Terry and to Bill," commissioner Bud Selig said at a news conference with McGuirk and Braves chairman emeritus Bill Bartholomay. "I'm sure there will be an increased role for Hank." After setting the career home run record with 755 and retiring as a player, Aaron became a Braves vice president and the director of player development in October 1976 and held that role for 13 years. He became a senior vice president in December 1989 and also currently is on the club's board of directors. ESPN MLB -- Atlanta at Washington 11 a.m. N.Y. On Tuesday, Favre told the Biloxi (Miss.) that because he is unable to practice while recovering from offseason ankle surgery, he planned on staying home in Mississippi to assist in preparations for his daughter's upcoming high school graduation. ANAHEIM, Calif. - Anaheim defenseman Chris Pronger was suspended for one game by the NHL on Wednesday for his hit on Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom the previous night. Pronger, a former Norris Trophy winner and a finalist for the award this year, will miss Game 4 of the Ducks-Re- d Wings series tonight in Anaheim. He leads the Ducks with 12 points, including three goals, during the playoffs. "We disagree completely with (NHL disciplinarian) Colin Campbell's decision here. But we respect the Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. "If you watch some of the other views, it looks like a dangerous, high hit. If you look at the end zone view, I think it shows best that Chris Pronger went to hit Tomas Holmstrom at a 45legree angle from the boards." expected to attend Packers minicamp: At Milwaukee, Packers quarterback Brett Favre has changed his mind and now is expected to attend the team's mandatory minicamp this weekend, a person familiar with the situation said Wednesday. No charges have been filed in thefcase, but Surry County Commonwealth's Attorney Gerald Poind-exte- r said Wednesday as many as six to 10 people could be involved. Dog fighting is a felony in Virginia. "I'm convinced from what I saw that dog fighting has occurred down there, but who was involved in it I don't know at this point," Poindexter said in a telephone interview, noting that he saw what looked like blood spatters in a room over a garage. The Cougars have a 7 (.728) record in the seven-yea- r history at Larry H. Miller Field and one more victory would not only push them at the century mark, it would secure a kick on second place in the Mountain West Conference. Getting to the NCAA regionals is a good thing for the BYU Softball team and getting to play host to a four-teapod is even better, as this is the second straight year the Cougars have had the privilege. That means coach Gordon Eakin has a mostly experienced team that should know how to limit distractions, and it knows how to disperse the workload. Good thing, too, because painting dugouts in sun last May, the baking-ho- t and doing "just about every other little thing to get our field ready to allow us to be good hosts" for the tournament, Eakin said, was just a little much. "It can be a distraction," Eakin said of having to throw the party. "In some ways, you'd rather play elsewhere just because then you go on the road 41-1- 8 and everyone understands there's one thing to concern ourselves with. First, how will the Cougars respond to postseason play without the benefit of a conference tournament? The Mountain West Conference disbanded it, deciding it would rather have its regular season receive more value in NCAA regional consideration. BYUs most successful pitcher, Christie Zinanti (19-8- ), wonders a little bit how her team will react. She happens to be the second-biggequestion, as the Pueblo, Colo., native is a State. The Cougars have faced freshman. Eakin and Zinanti agree the trio a total of eight times, she's struggled her last three with a 2 record. It should be a captivating at noon. "We know the teams we'll regional, with BYU hoping to turn an MWC championship play and we know it's not goseason into something bigger. ing to be easy," Eakin said. There are two big unknowns Cal Poly is considered by Eakin st beings and sometimes it can be tough to distance yourself from life when you're at home. "Of course, there are benefits. The players are very familiar with their surroundings, they get to rest in their own beds and there are def initely more comforts to staying here." The win means the No. 1 Cougars will now face UC Santa Barbara in the semifinals today. After a close first half in which BYU had a 63 lead, the Cougar defense stepped up in the second half and held the Gauchos scoreless. Tyler Monteath led the Cougars with three goals.
