Dean passed from HERALD on active duty in the Extended Pacific Theater of War, culminating with time spent in Japan after the Japanese surrender. He was honorably discharged from the service in June 21, 1946 at Treasure Island Quarters in San Francisco. He organized numerous choirs, dance bands, and taught music in public schools. Dean was also a gardener of considerable note, having received an Orem City award for his beautiful yard and flower gardens. While living in Provo he was especially remembered for "irrigating" his entire yard by damming up the ditch in front of his house using rags and newspapers and forcing water onto his yard by flooding not only the street but the sidewalk in order to get water up onto his yard, much to the distress of his neighbors and passersby. Dean and Afton contributed generously to numerous programs; Boy Scouting, Snow College, Utah State University and Brigham Young University and many other charities. He also financially assisted many students to attend school by paying for their tuition and other expenses.
