NBA needs him to reach his peak, not to let strings of poor decisions land him on some "What Could Have Been" halftime feature. It seems that's where he's headed. Barely into his second season, Anthony has been busted with marijuana, spotted on a ghetto DVD threatening snitches and targeted for extortion. That's not to mention problems that include poor shot selection, lackluster defense and a couple occasions of immature pouting (in a game last year he refused to go back in after1' teammates complained about his shot c "'" selection, and he openly complained about his minutes in the Athens Games). He used to be mentioned in the same breath with LeBron James as one of the league's burgeoning stars. Now he's mentioned in the same breath as Kobe Bryant as one of the league's problems. FIVE KEY INGREDIENTS NEEDED IN AN ASSISTANT Mendenhall has a crash course in the about the BYU hiring process. He witnessed it first-han- d when he was hired, and now he is wading through BYLTs unique bureaucracy to get two Offensive assistants on the staff. As names of potential candidates have leaked out, it has been' interesting to see the reaction of some fans. A few of those being considered by Bronco are not exactly household names. Some are even gasp! -r- - high school coaches. There appear to be many in Cougar Nation who cannot un- Bronco coach derstand how a could be considered a viable candidate for BYUs staff. - Bronco has never been one to "be impressecrby celebrity status. Just because a potential coach happlayer way pened to be an back when doesn't mean he will be a great college coach. Bronco's search will undoubtedly extend well beyond yellowing press clippings. So what is it that makes a ?ood assistant coach? Each head c bach's list will vary, but there are f ve key characteristicsingredie its that will be atop nearly eveiy list. Let's look at them. I Loyalty. A head coach wants an assistant who is completely loyal to him and his players, especially in difficult times. One of the worst situations imaginable is for a staff member to question or backstab the head coach or another assistant. Some in the media were criticizing Bronco because he shed tears at Gary Crowton's "resignation" press conference. They couldn't understand why he would show that kind of affection for Crowton because the administration might look askance at such a display of fondness for a rejected coach. Those tears were a byproduct of Bronco's fierce loyalty to Crowton, and he will expect the same devotion from his assistants. I Chemistry. Coaching staffs are like teams. Some staffs get along well and seem to click, while others argue and bicker like teenagers. A head coach would be a fool to bring in an assistant who might be a great coach but who would create an uncomfortable or adversarial atmosphere among staff members. I Teaching ability. Coaching is really nothing more than teaching on a football field. Some of the best athletes of all time have failed miserably as coaches because they could not teach others how to duplicate what they did. Others who were mediocre players, or who did not even play in college, are excellent teachers and coaches. Fans often wonder why a person who played a certain position in college is asked to coach a different posi- tion. Usually, if a coach is a good teacher, he should be able to coach any position, if you don't believe that, take a, look at Andy Reid. An offensive lineman in college, Reid coached just about every offensive position in the NFL before becoming head coach of the Eagles. v I Motivator. Great coaches have the ability to inspire their athletes to a higher level of performance. Motivational styles vary drastically from coach to coach. Some coaches motivate by fear, ridicule and intimidation. Others motivate in exactly the opposite fashion, using respect as the moving force. An example of different styles would be Roger French and Lance Reynolds, both of whom coached BYLTs offensive line. French was a screamer. Reynolds uses quiet leadership. French's style worked with some athletes, while Reynolds' low-ke- y style was perfect for the tightly wound linemen of 2001. The best coaches are those who know how to adjust their motivational styles to reach individual athletes. I Recruiter. Eddie Kimball used to remind BWs coaches that, "No jockey ever won the Kentucky Derby riding a jackass." Recruiting is the lifeblood of college athletics. It is also hard work. A coach must be a good salesman for the head coach and the pro- gram. Good recruiting covers a multitude of sins. So Bronco is sorting through resumes and interviewing potential candidates, looking for that diamond in the rough someone like LaVeil Edwards when he was hired from Granite High School in 1962 or Mike Holmgren. all-st- i W 22 23 (Hush Hart Bogans None a as 23 27 Charlotte Miami 56 (Hastem 91 Miami 24 (Wade 9).
