The visitor is in awe of Star-la'-s seemingly perfect life and wants it for herself. She steals Starla's boyfriend and her spot on the cheerleading squad, but that's just the beginning. CBS The 31st Annual chiefificretary People's Choice Awards New categories such as "favorite animated movie star" and "best line" have been added to this year's edition of the awards. Also, online voting has been expanded to allow fans to cast votes via the Internet in all categories. Awards are given in the fields of music, movies and television, and broken down in many instances into subcategories. For example, there are three for reality TV series alone: competition, makeover and "other." 9 pjn. HBO Carnivale The second season of the Depression-er- a drama opens with the new episode "Los Moscos." Brother Justin's (Clancy Brown) radio preaching lands him a new follower, a prisoner named Varlyn Stroud (John Carroll Lynch). Ben (Nick Stahl) gets a message from Management about his father. Clea DuVall, Tim DeKay, Adri-enn- e Barbeau and Ralph Waite also star. , 9 p.m. check local listings PBS Masterpiece Theatre Suspicion drives a man mad with jealousy in "He Knew He Was adaptaRight," a new two-pation of Anthony Trollope's novel. Oliver Dimsdale stars as Louis Trevelyan, the young husband consumed by the thought that rt his wife, Emily (Laura Fraser,"A Knight's Tale") is cheating on him with a friend of her father's (Geoffrey Palmer, "Mrs. Brown"). Christina Cole plays Emily's sister, who has romantic problems of her own. 10 pan, HBO Unscripted An acting teacher (Frank Langella) dispenses instruction and advice to aspiring thespians in this new half-hoseries, which focuses on three (Krista Allen, Bryan Greenberg, Jennifer Hall) in particular. In the premiere, Bryan is up for a part on "ER" but blows it when he offends a cast member. Speaking of "ER" stars, the producer of this series is none other than George Clooney, who also directed five episodes. 10 p.m. VH1 Strange Love The hookup of Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen had fans of the celebrity "Big Brother" knockoff "The Surreal Life" glued to their sets last season. The Flavor-Brigitsaga continues in this new series, in which the rapper visits Nielsen in Italy and meets some of her friends and family members, and the actress gets to know Flav's kinfolk in the Bronx. A trip to Las Vegas is also in the works, but will it include a wedding? 10:01 pjn. ABC Boston Legal Founding partner Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen) rejoins the firm in an effort to restore order in the new episode "Schmidt Happens." A forceful sort think Murphy Brown with a law she is soon getting on degree Denny's (William Shatner) nerves. Lori (Monica Potter) represents a Sudanese man suing the United States for not taking action against atrocities in his homeland. WB Critics' Choice Awards Eric McCormack ("Will & Grace") hosts the Broadcast Film Critics Association's salute to the past year's best in movies. Tom Cruise is receiving the group's first Distinguished Career Achievement in Performing Arts Award. His sole 2004 film, "Collateral," is up for best picture, along with "The Aviator," "Sideways," "Kinsey ," "Finding Neverland," "Ray," "Million Dollar Baby" and three others. 9 pan. LIFETIME Movie: Dawn Anna Debra Winger stars new drama as in this a teacher, coach and single mom fact-base- d who survives two brain opera- tions and two strokes with an amazing spirit and will to live. Just as she is getting her life back together, however, reality ' deals her another blow when one of her daughters is slain in the Columbine High School massacre. Winger's husband, Arliss Howard, directs. 9 p an. ABC The Bachelorette A familiar face returns for the dating show's new season. Jen Schefft was Andrew Firestone's choice in the third season of "The Bachelor," but the romance didn't work out. Now she's in charge and hoping that one of the 25 men competing for her hand will be her true love. Jen helped choose them, so they've already cleared one hurdle. In the season premiere, set in New York, two of Jen's girlfriends go under cover to scope out the guys. TUESDAY JANUARY 11, 2005 8 pjn. HBO A Rape in a Small Town: The Florence Holway Story In 1991, Florence Holway, then in her 70s, was raped in her New Hampshire home by an intruder. He was caught, but the district attorney offered him a plea bargain, claiming there was insufficient evidence for a conviction. Outraged, Holway fought hard against the plea deal, and after losing that battle, became a crusader for the rights of victims and a rewriting of the state's rape laws. Her inspiring story is told in this new documentary. 10 pjn. ABC NYPD Blue In the new episode "Stoli With a Twist," Sipowicz and Clark (Dennis Gosselaar) set a Franz, Mark-Patrap for a serial killer who finds his victims at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Murphy and Ortiz (Bonnie Somerville, Jacqueline Obradors) are enlisted to do the undercover work. Elsewhere, a stockpile of steroids is found in the apartment of a stabbing victim. ul 11 pjn. BRAVO Queer Eye for the Straight Girl A team of "Gal Pals" works its magic on female fashion victims in this new spinoff of the hit "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." Women facing a turning point, such as a milestone birthday or wedding, receive help with looks, lifestyle and home decor from the guys, who consult as needed with teammate Honey Labrador for a female perspective. WEDNESDAY JANUARY 12, 2005 8 pjn. check local listings PBS Great Performances if Sl Dawn Anna Debra Winger ' Broadway baby and "West Wing" cast member Kristin Chenoweth gives her killer singing voice a workout in the new "Leonard Bernstein's Candide With the New York Philharmonic" She plays Cunegonde, love interest of the comic operetta's title character (tenor Paul Groves), a young man who experiences all kinds of adventures but refuses to let go of his cockeyed optimism. Patti LuPone also stars in this semi- staged production. 10 pjn. A&E Biography Unlike your average "Biography of someone deceased, the new episode "Dorothy Stratten" doesn't end with the death of its subject. Stratten, 1980's Playboy Playmate of the Year, was murdered by her husband and mentor, Paul Snider, who feared losing her to smitten director Peter Bogdanovich. The hour chronicles the ugly legal battle that ensued between Bogdanovich and Playboy boss Hugh Hefner, whom the director blamed for Snider's rage. THURSDAY JANUARY 13, 2005 9 pjn. ESPN Tilt ESPN hopes to cash in on the growing popularity of poker as a spectator sport with this new drama series. Set in Las Vegas, it stars Michael Madsen ("Reservoir Dogs") as Don Everest, the current star player on the poker circuit, with Todd Williams (Third Watch") as who wants a young to take him down. Kristin Lehman ("Century City"), Don McManus and Michael Murphy also star. STARZ Movie: Confes- sions of a Teenage Drama Queen If making mountains out of molehills were a sport, Lola (Lindsay Lohan) would have her varsity letter. The temperamental' title character of this 2004 comedy faces traumas galore when she and her mom move to a new town, where she clashes with the reigning popularity queen (Megan Fox) at her new school and tries to cope with the news that her favorite band is breaking up.
