Greg Biffle overcame a slow pit stop in the early going and drove away with a victory Saturday in the NASCAR Busch Series race at Darlington Raceway e this season in Biffle, driving both Busch and Nextel Cup, beat Roush Racing teammate Jeff Burton to the finish line in the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 a full straightaway by 3.115econds on the 1.366-miloval. Biffle lost ground, falling from the lead to seventh place when a lugnut came unglued during a pit stop under caution on lap 25. But the crew on No. 60 Ford made up for the mistake on his final pit stop of the day, getting the 2002 Busch Series champion out of the pits just in front of Bur-- 1 event. ton on lap 101 of the 147-la- p "My crew ripped off a great stop and got me out front when it counted and it's a good thing because, it's hard . full-tim- egg-shap- Bif-fle- 's to pass here and you've got to use up a lot of tire to make a pass," the winner said. "Burton's car being so strong, it might have been pretty hard for me to get by him at the end." He and Burton, who has won four Busch events and two Cup races here, put on a great show midway through the race, swapping the lead several times before the last of four caution flags waved on lap 99 when Mike Wallace crashed. Joe Nemechek stayed on track as the other leaders pitted and was in the lead, with Biffle and Burton right behind, when the green flag came back out for the start of lap 105. Biffle, Burton and a host of others quickly took advantage of Nemechek's worn tires and NeJ mechek wound up 28th, a lap down. Meanwhile, Biffle pulled away from Burton. He led a race-hig- h 67 laps, in. cluding the final 43. It was the first racing test of the SAFER barriers recently installed on the outside walls in all four turns on ' the already narrow track. There were three crashes in turns three and four, none of them caused by the smaller racing groove. No injuries were reported and there were no serious complaints about the "soft walls" the track. narrowing ' "No one should complain that the racetrack is smaller because it's made the racetrack safer," Burton said. "It certainly does impact the way you ve, but it impacts it for everybody." I Wheldon wins pole: At Avondale, Ariz., 1- . Dan Weldon, a Englishman who was the IRL's rookie of the year last season, followed up on his third place at the IRL, opener three weeks ago by capturing his first pole Saturday with a 174.779 mph lap during qualifying for the Copper World Indy 200. Defending champion Tony Kanaan gave the Andretti Green Racing team a front-rosweep for Sunday's race its second since moving to the IRL from the rival CART series last year. w Kanaan and Michael Andretti, in his last season as a driver, qualified in their first IRL event at Homestead, Fla. I Labonte eyes another win at Darlington: At Darlington, S.C, Terry Labonte has a chance to make history at Darlington Raceway, and put some life into his season. Labonte's first win came at NASCAR's oldest supers peedway in 1980, and the latest of his 22 career victories came in September in the Southern 500 on the same 1.366-mil- e oval. The two-tim- e series champion today could become the first driver to win consecutive races at Darlington since Jeff Burton swept both events in 1999. Labonte hasn't gotten off to the kind of start in 2004 that he and his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team hoped for. He has four finishes ranging from 17th to 24th and is 20th in the season points; "Overall, we're not very pleased with what we've accomplished," Labonte ' said Saturday before the final practice for the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400. .
