Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep all give bravura performances as three women in three time periods, each on the edge of either learning to cope with life or giving up on it This is a masterful piece of work whose emotional resonance is so natural you wonder why more films can't accomplish it A (Jordan, Gateway) THE HOURS 50 min.; R for freharsh some nudity, profanity, quent some blood and violence; in Spanish with English subtitiesJWs ly fun film operates on the premise that luck is a trans-ferrab- le INTACTO (1 hrv commodity, and that certain people have a gift for taking it from others and adding it to their own. Set in Munich in 1918, the drama explores Hitler's interest in art, with an art dealer named Max (John Cusack) trying to help him funnel his passton and rage into his painting and drawing, rather than into political tirades. Despite earnest performances from Cusack and from Noah Taylor as the future Fuhrer, the film must overcome dialogue like. "You're a hard man to like, Hitter, and "You wanna go out for drinks, Hitler?" It is hard for modem audiences not to laugh, wince or in some other way register recognition upon hearing this sort of thing. i .4,c. i , ; ' yfjvw.s C m ' (ro.ur-- (Broadway) (2hrs., 13 min.; PG for some mild vnlence, a childbirth scene) Whimsical adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel about a young man's adventures in and around London.
