"This game is not about individuals, it's about team," said linebacker Shawn Barber, who returned an interception for a touchdown in last Saturday's 27-- 3 rout of the Dallas Cowboys. "When you believe in yourselves as a team, you can do just about ' anything. But this isn't over for us. This is just the beginning. We want to get someplace special." That someplace special, of course, is Super Bowl XXXVIII in San Diego. The Eagles haven't been to a Super Bowl since the 1980 season, when Dick Vermeil's team was beaten by the Oakland Raiders. But there's a feeling among Reid's players that destiny is If he is unable to play against the Bears, Rob Johnson will make his second start of the season. Tampa Bay quarterback Brad Johnson said Thursday his sore back is improving, but it's unlikely he'll play Sunday night when the Buccaneers close the regular season against the Chicago Bears. Johnson missed last Monday night's 17-- 7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers because of a severe lower back bruise suffered during the fourth quarter of the Bucs' three-poivictory over the Detroit Lions two weeks ago. ' NFC PHILADELPHIA left knee is healthy. Shanahan said he felt Beuerlein would give the Broncos the best chance to win after Griese had one of his worst games of the season against Oakland last week. DENVER Steve Beuerlein will be Denver's starting quarterback against Arizona on Sunday, but he doesn't believe that means everyone should give up on Brian Griese just yet. "A lot of great ones have been through the same scenario, the same situation," Beuerlein said. "John Elway, all of you will remember I'm sure, his first four years were not a picnic. People were all over him and talking about running him out of town. "So you know, it happens to everybody at some point in your career." He's taken special photographs with former rival players at every stadium this season and has let himself soak up the adulation of the home crowd. He's had more time to enjoy the crowd because he hasn't played much lately, his one big disappointment. He will be with the starters for at least one play Sunday e cerefollowing a mony, but he hasn't been a regular on defense since assistant coach Marvin Lewis gave Green's nickel-bac- k duties to rookie Rashad Bauman at Dallas on Thanksgiving Day. "For the first time in my career I did not touch the field on defense. It really hurt," Green said. "The thing that hurt the most was that I wasn't aware of it. He never really officially told me, even thought I asked him a couple of times, "Hey are we making the switch? Just tell me.' He never did. "It's been an amazing season for this football team," said wide receiver Antonio Freeman, who won a Super Bowl and went to another with Green Bay. Charles Woodson out after undergoing surgery to repair a broken fibula in his right leg, the Raiders need every available body for their regular season finale Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs, James started the first 13 games of the year but hasn't played since Dec. 12 when he had his own leg surgery. Like Woodson, James had a cracked right fibula and underwent a operation to have a stabilizing plate inserted into his leg. James practiced this week for the first time since having the procedure.and has been given the to play against the Chiefs. "He's ready to go and he's cleared to playr , Raiders coach Bill Callahan said. "He looked good. In terms of knowing if he's ready to go, does he appear like he's the same as he was (before the surgery)? tt appears that he is, yes." "The things we've overcome and the things we've achieved, it's like a storybook season. Now we've just got to finish off the regular part of it and everything else will play out its own way." Reid doesn't dare look too far ahead, though. He understands that the immediate future continues to be problematic, mostly because of his quarterback situation. He's counting on McNabb to be back for the playoffs, but it's not certain just how effective he can be after such a long layoff. And Detmer, who still is not fully healed from his elbow injury, also will be rusty if he plays in the postseason. "The way we looked at Donovan's injury was that a good football player got hurt and that somebody else will step up in that spot and do a good job," Reid said. "Don was always a big advocate of telling people he wasn't the whole show. He's as big a team player as anybody on our team. So all you can do is keep the guys very focused and not look ahead. Just get ready for the next one, and then when the next one comes, get ready for that one." A simple philosophy, to be sure. But Reid's patient hand and steely resolve in the face of adversity have paid off. The Eagles have won six straight games with three different quarterbacks and a defense with few stars, but fewer rivals. Is there any doubt about who wins Coach of the Year? "He's got my vote," tight end Chad Lewis, another former Cougar, said. "To face what we've had to face and to get this far, that says a lot about the job has done. I don't think a lot of people expected us to be here right now. But he never stopped believing in us." Even when it seemed as if there wasn't much left to believe in.
