Manned by Provo officers, Sheriffs Utah County deputies and Utah Lake State Park rangers, the checkpoint started at 2 p.m. Saturday. By sundown, eight arrests had been made. Provo officer Mark West said the checkpoint was authorized Saturday until 1 1 p.m. West, who was in charge of the operation, said the goal was to reduce the number of people on the roads driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He said there had been one marijuana possession arrest, with the others either alcohol related or arrests for outstanding warrants. At first, officers began getting attacked by mosquitoes until repellent was brought in for those who ran the checkpoint and had to stand in the street. West said one motorist, who was not found in violation, was upset and argued with officers about the constitutionality of the checkpoint before moving on. "But a lot more people we stopped thanked us for what we were doing," West said. Around sundown there was significantly more people leaving the park, many towing boats. "We've heard from the rangers that the word is getting around in the park and people are looking around for designated drivers, and that's exactly what we want," West said. Those running the checkpoint said the main reason for the holiday weekend checkpoint is to keep drunk drivers out from behind the MLY HERALD THE ! m holiday deaths.
