After 10 years, "Beverly Hills, 90210" is packing it in. The Aaron Spelling-producedrama, which did much to help Fox establish itself as a viable network, ends its r run there Wednesday with a farewell (8 p.m. ET). Some developments are sure to please longtime fans, particularly the wedlovebirds Donna ding of (Tori Spelling, the producer's daughter) and David (Brian Austin Green). Meanwhile, Kelly (Jennie Garth) chooses between fiance Matt (Daniel Dylan (Luke Cosgrove) and Perry), and Steve (Ian Ziering) becomes a parent while wife Janet (Lindsay Price) starts a new job. Also, Noah (Vincent Young) ponders a future with recovering alcoholic Ellen (Heidi Noelle Lenhart). Former regulars Gabrielle Carterif Thiessen return and Tiffani-Arabe- r It d two-hou- u e for the finale, and even though he couldn't be on the set due to a London stage commitment, founding cast member Jason Priestley also partici- pates. The end of "90210" had been forecast for several seasons, and until relatively recently, the show might even have gone to an 1 1th year. "We were still negotiating with Fox in January," Spelling reports, "and I think we found out some time in February-(thaFox wanted to end the series). They asked us to shoot an extra hour so that the finale could be two hours long, and we didn't have a script ready, so we had to get on that fast. "We also had to ask the cast if they'd be willing to do it, and they were very sweet about it. I think they had the same feeling I did: 'Wouldn't you like to go out with a big event, instead of just a normal episode? They agreed to it right away." The result is the official finale of the series, as opposed to last week's prematurely titled Fox special "Beverly Hills, 90210: The Final Goodbye," which compiled clips from past stories and interviews. TV mogul Spelling had certain things in mind while readying the "90210" swan song: "We really wanted to finish the show, with all of the characters completing their story1 lines, and I think we've managed to do that. We also wanted to do it on a spectacular level. Instead of having the wedding celebration at the Peach Pit After Dark (the gang's usual hangout), we called Merv Griffin and went to the Coconut Grove at the Beverly Hilton Hotel (which Griffin owns). If we had to go out, I'm glad we're going out this way." For the stars who staved the longest, "Beverly Hills, 90210" became a total training ground. Priestley, Green and Ziering have been producers of the show, and nearly all of the original actors have gotten to direct it. Garth called the shots on two episodes, but she's glad she didn't have that job on the last one. "Everyone was very emotional," she recalls. "We were at that point, because very tight-kni- t we knew things were about to come crashing to a halt." While Garth has played her, Kelly has endured everything from rape and cocaine addiction to a miscar-- . riage and a wedding called off at the altar. "I think the show ends very tastefully." Garth says, "as if there could still be another day after it's over. Nothing huge happens, because that would be too unrealistic. We sort of leave the characters the way we met them. It was done right, and I'm ' really glad so many people divided to stick with it until it was over." Garth has parlayed her "90210" popularity into a number of and she hopes to continue in that realm. "I think the people who have liked Kelly, and are accepting of me ' as an actress, are ready to see me do something else." However, Garth's immediate agenda is to spend more actor Peter time with her fiance Facinelli. currently Kevin Spacey's in the movie "The Big Kahuand their daughter Luca na" Bella, who turns 2 next month. By watching daughter Tori do certain scenes on "90210," Spelling has gotten a sense of how they'll feel for him in real life. He says upon seeing her in a wedding gown for the last story, "The only time I felt worse was when Donna lost her virginity. Actually, I slipped when I cut in to dance with Tori during the scenes we co-st- filmed at the Coconut Grove. We had 200 extras, and it was the biggest round of applause I'd ever gotten." Knowing the original series had to expire sometime. Spelling began for "90210: The mulating a spinoff in 1997. "1 didn't want New Years" it on while the first show was still going," he explains, "because that would have been horrible for the (original) cast. Now, I think it could be a hot project if we wait a year or so. Other networks have been asking about it, too." "Beverly Hills. 90210" repeats run every day on FX. That pleases Spelling, but he adds. "It doesn't erase the pain (of the show ending). Those kids have become like family to me. At the wrap party, they gave t me a gift I'll never forget, a photo frame. The left side has a picture of them when they started .the show, and the right side has a picture of them that was taken recently. The whole thing has been just a wonderful experience." fold-ou- - |
