"I didn't want to act as a journalist in this case. I wanted to create my own character. Even though I appropriated the man's .time and place and elements of his personality. I wanted essentially to be free to invent my own character. "I don't know exactly how close I am to the real person. It's not my goal to recreate Tony Noriega. My goal is to understand how a person who lived through the events that Noriega did, and acted in the way he did, understood himself and what he was after. And to some extent, my goals as a writer were to explore evil and that mixture of good and evil that's in everyone. "What attracted me to Noriega as a character originally was, as evil as he was and wicked as we all thought he was, he was also a very spiritual man. There was that con- tradiction between his apparent evil and his spiritual seeking that drew my attention to him in the first place. No matter what we thought of him, he thought of himself as a religious person. I think that's true of every person. There are very few people who think of themselves as evil. And so if you look at the world through his eyes, you might learn something about the nature of evil." And does he feel the film does justice to the character and themes? "Bob Hoskins was amazing.. The thing about Bob is he has this dangerous quality about him as an actor, yet he's also very funny. Those are absolutely the essential qualities of Manuel Antonio Noriega. He was both menacing and effusive, and Bob has exactly that combination. Plus he's kind of cubically shaped and short of stature. In certain physical respects, he was similar to Noriega, and that was essential as well." He also holds Roger Spottiswoode's direction and the commitment of the cast in equally high regard. The difficulties of making a movie for a modest amount are really terrific. Roger Spottiswoode is a great craftsman. He knows how to put the money on the screen. And every dollar that was spent on this is on the screen. And he got a lot of great performances, too. I just can't say enough about Roger's handling of the whole thing. "He and Bob and the crew and cast people took pay cuts to do this, and they did it because they loved the material." Combs, Tribune Media Services In multi-facete- the fall of 1989, America's became riveted on a little-know- Latin n Ameri- - can dictator named Manual Antonio Noriega. A federal court indicted him for drug trafficking, and he became a major target of the Drug Enforcement Administration. His position as top dog in the political hierarchy of Panama made him a difficult target to apprehend. Ultimately, it took a military invasion of Panama to capture him. Even though the American public knew little about him prior to his indictment, he was well known to American political leaders. Noted for his deceptions and double-crosseNoriega perhaps had gone too far for the coafort of American diplomats and political leaders, and the indictment was simply the final straw in a long string of missteps for the Panamanian leader. It had become too dangerous to let him run free. On Sunday, April 2, at 8 p.m. Eastern Showtime presents a fictional character study of the dictator in "Noriega: God's Favorite." Bob full-scal- e g Hoskins unleashes his talent on the title role, and presents a portrayal of the dictator, who is by turns ruthless and comical, able to shrewdly use violent and murderous means to gain political ends, yet unable to control his harridan of a wife and his beautiful and naive, yet d social-climbin- g equally shrewd, mistress. Joining Hoskins are Jeffrey DeMunn as the papal nuncio who plays a major role in the ultimate capture of Noriega; Rosa Blasi, a former Miss Chicago making her movie debut, as Noriega's mistress, Vicky; Denise Blasor as his wife, Felicidad; Nestor Carbonell as Major Giroldi, who attempts a doomed coup; Luis Avalos as the figurehead president of Panama, Nicky Barletta; and John Verea as the Noriega-hatinpriest. Father Jorge, who becomes accessory to both a Giroldi's aborted coup and Noriega's g ultimate capture. Roger Spottiswoode directed from a screenplay by Lawrence Wright, who also wrote the novel of the same title. Novels are usually written before movie scripts, but in the case of "Noriega: God's Favorite," Wright wrote the screenplay first. "I didn't think the movie would ever get made," he says. "I decided I would write it as a novel, then Showtime surprised me by pursuing this project. I actually started throwing up obstacles because I wanted to finish the novel. I'm surprised they continued to work with me because I was so obstreperous. I finished the novel on the set of the movie. It was a horse race. The novel comes out the last week in March and the movie is coming out e which in April. So it's one is coming out first." Wright is a journalist who watched the unfolding events in Panama in December of 1989 with great interest. As the American forces closed in on Noriega, he took refuge at the Vatican consulate in Panama. Here, knowing American forces wouldn't be able to capture him without setting off an international incident, Noriega hoped to escape the tightening noose about his neck. The American troops responded by blaring rock music outside the Vatican compound 24 hours a day. Wright readily notes that he did not attempt to recreate Noriega as a journalist might, assembling facts and letting them stand on their nose-to-nos- |
