Because some states are experiencing flu epidemics, many people are too ill to donate. As a result, in some parts of the country, donations are down and the blood supply is adversely affected, especially type 0 bl(xd. At this time, the American Red Cross Utah Blood Services Division's blood supply is adequate to meet the needs of Utah patients. . Utah is one of several states which have suffered a flu epidemic. The American lied Cross Utah Blood Services Division noticed that many regular donors could not donate because they were ill with the flu and other viruses, but other donors have stepped forward. The American Red Cross is committed to assuring that blood is available when patients need it, regardless where they live. Utah is preparing to help. Red Cross workers believe more Utahns than usual will come forward to donate blood in response to the national appeal, so the Utah Blood Services Division has geared up its operations to help collect additional blood donations. As usual, blood will be supplied as needed first to Utah hospitals. Any excess blood supplies will be redistributed to parts of the country that are in need through the American Red Cross national processing and distribution system. Regularly scheduled blood drives will be held at businesses, schools, churches and organizations across the state. In addition, the Red Cross has donor centers in Ogden, Orem, Murray and St. George. A donor can call the American Red Cross at for dates, times and locations of donation opportunities. If Utahns respond in large numbers, even with the best of preparations, donors will experi ence longer waiting timesThe Red Cross strongly encourages donors to schedule appointments to help reduce their waiting time.
