An attempt to use a dog to chase the birds out was not totally effective, paring the number of birds down from 4,000 to 400. Hence the hunting permits, which the state Division of Wildlife Resources says are legal as long as the city grants them. However, we have a problem with them. y Mona Charen McCain's charm poisonous to GOP conservatives This is John McCain's moment. When the press turns its attention to someone, the who chamber reverberates so loudly that it becomes difficult to maintain perspective. A few months back, it was George W. Bush's moment. "He's In the midst of that drumbeat got more money than Croesus," "He's wrapped up all the important endorsements;" "He's got his own supporters plus his dad's huge network;" "He's got the common touch;" "He's got the catchiest slogan" the cfuestiori on everyone's lips was "Why hold the election at all?" No one loves his personal story more than they, but his political history of proving "independence" too often seems to find him on the opposite side from conservatives. His campaign finance reform is probably unconstitutional and would selves closer than that in pursuit of their prey. Businesses in the area are already reporting windows damaged by errant gunfire. If this keeps up, it could be somebody stepping out of a building for a break who catches lead. WE THINK there are other alternatives to getting rid of the birds. One is more dogs. If one dog can chase off 3,600 birds, two may be able to get rid of all of them. Another option is noisemak-ers- . Either electronic devices or chemical cannons can create enough racket to convince birds that this is not a quiet place to call home. It's a strategy farmers have used for years to chase off crows effectively. Or, the city and golf course managers could use decoys of predators to geese. If geese see an enemy is already calling the links home, they may decide to find a new place to set down. The important thing is to solve the goose problem with- out hurting others. It's interesting to know the facility is 20 years old and 360,000 visits were made last year. I swim at the center two or three times a week and love it. Using the hydrotherapy pool and swimming helped save me from the need of back surgery after rupturing two disks playing volleyball a few years ago. I also learned a valuable lesson at the px)l awhile back. One duy a few IM THE 'OOs I years ago, I was swimming in one of the lap lanes by myself. The pool was crowded and another individual joined me in the same lane. Several times we collided as we were passing. Finally, the man stopped me and commented that since we were sharing a lane we ought to work out a system so we wouldn't run into each other. My response to him was that I thought he ought to find his own lane, as I was there first. The next time I went swimming I happened to notice the lap rules on the far wall. I read them and discovered the rules plainly spelled out that sharing laps was pool policy and explained that the swimmers should swim to the right and pass to the left. I was embarrassed for not even having known the ruloB and making a fool of myself. Hey, life has rules and the good ones are for everyone's benefit. His support of a huge tobacco deal would enormously enrich a tiny group of trial lawyers who are among the most generous donors to Democratic candidates. McCain is a hero and a charmer. The fear is that he would cheerfully sacrifice nearly any conservative principle for the sake of good press. THE DAILY HERALD LETTERS POLICY The Daily Herald welcomes your letters to the editor.
