He really offered no hope to the city commissioners about participating in the project. That seems to squash any idea of a joint venture, unless the school board can come up with some way to raise the money. It will be a sad thing for the school district if it can't figure out a way to join in the project. If there is no other recourse, the school board might even request that the city delay its project for one year until the district can come up with the $500,000. However, it's just possible that for the want of $500,000 the school district is going to lose a chance for a $1,000,000 facility that it desperately needs. There are tremendous advantages to the school district for a joint project. . The school district would be able to use the swimming pool and handball courts from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day Tor the nine months of the school year. The present Provo High School is already cramped in its physical education program, and the addition of those facilities would be a tremendous improvement. If the facilities are built at North Park the school district will probably end up not using the facilities very much, if at all. W OAKMONT. Pa. (I'PI -- The 73rd U S. Open turned from just another tournament to a page ol history Saturday.1, and it seems only fitting that the most historic golfer of the era was right smack in the middle of it all. Golden Opportunity The Provo City School District has a chance to purchase ten handball courts and a completely new indoor swimming pool tor the minimal cost of only $500,000. However, the school board, because of the poor financial position of the district, might have to let the opportunity slip by. At present estimated costs for an indoor swimming pool would run about $800,000 and ten handball courts would run about $200,000, for a total package of about 11,000,000. How can the school district get those SimoOO facilities for only $500,000? Well, the city is planning on spending about $500,000 on a project at North Park which would enclose the present Veteran's Memorial swimming pool and build ten handball courts. At the North Park location the facilities aren't conveniently located for school use, and so the school district won't receive much benefit from the city project. However, if the school board offered to come up with $500,000 of its own money, it is very possible that the city woild be willing to join hands with the school district and build the facility at a site adjacent to the present Provo High around the 1 8th green, referring toBoros.
