The history of the industry in that state runs back to lb52 when the Mormon church brought machinery to Utah from France for the. puriiose of making sugar. This machinery was hauled across the plains by ox teams at a time when the cost of hau-- ug freight from Missouri river to Salt Lake City was $000 per ton. The people at that time failed la their best efforts to produce sugar from beets, although, for a year or two some molasses was pro- duced. A mill was estamisnea at MOTHER ! The from the factories are available to beet growers for feeding and fattening sheep and cuttle. It has been found that a steer may fattened in 70 to 90 days by feeding dally 100 pounds of pulp, ti ixmmls of molasses and 4 IMiumls of wheat or barley; that sheep are fattened in from 45 to tW) days by feeding 10 jtounds of pulp and 1 pound of gran ; it being assumed that as well as these quantities of pulp .and niolasses the sheep and cattle receive as much alAll the falfa as can 1k consumed. pulp produced at the factories is readily disposed of and the beet growers are charged only an average price of 65 cents per ton for the pulp and $7 to $10 per ton for molasses. Withuch conditions as descrlled above prevailing on the Strawberry Valley project, it is possible for a farmer to grow his crop of beets during the summer time, to work at one of the factories during the fall and early winter,- or to feed stock to which he is entitled from the sugar factories at low cost. During the past few years a cooperative method of framing contracts between the susrar companies and beet growers has been the usual method of determining the price paid for beets. Both the companies and the growers are attempting to frame these contracts in such a way that the price of sugar throughout the year and the average sugar content In the beet shall be factors in: determining the final price paid. 1 KKW. About two years later an independent sugar company was formed and erected a factory at Springville with a capacity of 500 tons. These three factories are supported by beets grown on project lands. Since the completion of these three factories, the average area planted has been 14,000 acres and the average tonnage paid for annually is very close to 150,000. The lowest price paid to the farmers was $5 per ton and the highest price a considerable $12.
