Ulterior motives and hidden meanings are not looked for in their words. Therefore, the circumstances of the resignation of Justice John H. Clarke are peculiarly disappointing to the country. The resignation was announced with a suddeness that startled the country. But there must have been prior knowledge in the White House, as the announcement of the resignation was coincident with the naming of Justice Clarke's successor. There have been various published hints as to the reasons which inspired the resignation. The retiring justice in his letter explained broadly his desire to his neighbors in some public enterprises. Martin Leonard had taken a short cut through the park to his club and had succumbed to the beauty of the spring night. A sort of holiness crept over him, appealed to his better self, and he walked along purged of the baser thoughts of the day. Suddenly the figure on the bench attracted his attention. How could anyone droop so on such a night? He approached the bench slowly, warily, but the sound of a dry sobbing assured him of real trouble, and he dropped beside the her face girl. A MATTER OF CIRCULATION. The Daily Herald believes it owes a duty to the business interests who by their advertising patronage "T make it possible for a daily newspaper to thrive. This duty i3 telling the advertisers just what it is" they get when they buy advertising space in The Daily Herald. Advertising space is valuable only so far as the circulation of the newspaper carries the advertisement to readers possible purchasers of what is advertised. The Daily Herald recently explained to adversers that this newspaper is sent into of the tomes within Provo city limits. That of course is the verage circulation for the past six weeks. In the ame announcement it was made clear even to the verage school child's mind that this left approximately 263 homes who do not subscribe for The Daily Herald, but who do subscribe for another Provo news-- . paper. It appears that a few individuals jumped at the conclusion that the announcement indicated a circulation in Provo of 263 for the other newspaper, when, as i. & matter of fact, the hope was to convey the idea that The Daily Herald circulated pretty well all over Provo. The Daily Herald is not interested in the circulation of any newspaper other than The Daily Herald. The Daily Herald is satisfied to perform its duty to advertisers by keeping them posted on The Daily Herald circulation so that they may know how many people in Provo read their advertisements in The Daily Herald. The city with the most real leaders is the city that forges ahead, in business, in education, in religious life, and in social, recreational and all civic activities. The city without leaders stands stiM. It matters not so much how many followers the leaders in the former cities have at the beginning; at the end they have While the leaderless cities may have thousands of followers and never budge a step forward. The Community Service Leaders' association hasj been organized in Provo. The purpose of the organiza-- ; tion is to perpetuate the work begun this summer in Provo by representatives of the Community ervice cor- -' poration of New York City. The Daily Herald believes citizens of Provo can do nothing better for their city than cooperating with the association of leaders. The world lacks leaders ! Provo needs leaders!
