J The Utah County Outdoor association has produced reI : markable results in the short time that it has been in exist- nce. As a result of the organization of this society har- I has been created where nothing but discord formerly naony :, ,t was in evidence. From the suggestions given in meetings of the society various communities have taken the cue to tl Initiate some distinctive annual outdoor activity. u Pleasant Grove has hit upon the happy idea of starting an annua strawberry day which will take place for the first time Wednesday, balem will have an annual watermelon feast, and other cities in this county are already laying plans for the initiation of something new and novel. If the newly discovered caves in American Fork canyon were accessable to large numbers of hikers at one time there would be swung f into existence an annual Timpanogos cave hike by this time The eleventh annual Timpanogos hike has been sched uled for July 14 and 15. Behind all these movements stands V: the Utah County Outdoor association. It does not assume . the responsibility of conducting any one of the different out-I lir door features, but it will help in every possible manner to rally the entire county and the state behind the movements : Provo City will be represented at Pleasant Grove's ' Strawberry day by large numbers of citizens. The outdoor enthusiasts of the Brigharn Young university and all Provo f members of the Utah County Outdoor association will likely be in attendance. , ! VI . The question has frequently been asked, "What is the value of newspaper advertising?" Does the public really read these advertisements Does it believe the story and will it respond 7 in other words, is money spent in newspaper space a good investment; n A few months ago a Chicago retail shoe dealer, whose reputation for giving "value received" had never been questioned, decided to close one of its stores and not desiring to move its old stock to the new quarters, ran me piece of copy in several of the local papers, and a result the store was not only packed, but policemen were required to handle the waiting line of customers. All of which goes to prove that the value of newspaper advertising depends upon who does the advertising, what is advertised, and whether the public is in need of the mer chandise or service offered, and whether the newspaper has the circulation it claims to have. Every shoe merchant has established a reputation for himself in his locality for the services he renders and the quality of his wares; otherwise he could not long. continue m business. His sphere of influence may extend only a few eity blocks or he may be drawing patronage from miles around. When such dealers place their names and reputations back of a proposition special sale or a specific move-nuand when he uses advertising copy that puts his message over with a punch, then there is no question as to the value of the investment. Federal and state governments are cooperating with private owners of timber lands in an extensive campaign. They are spurred to every effort by fear that the beetle may spread from its present location and destroy the largest body of western By pine in America. homos, habitations for half a mil- lion jioople. How Beetles Attack. Attacking pine timber in swarms, the beetles iiore into the tree and pierce its living bark before the tree can protect itself by exuding pitch. The females and larvae then bore galleries in the thin lir- ing bark. In this way, the tree is soon girdled. Like a person whose spine is severed, the tree begins to die. In less than three months' time, the eggs laid in the bark are hatched, developed, and the increased swarm flies on to attack other trees.
