He gave many illustrations farming ground should be why changed fro nione' crop to another very frequently. Mr. Welch stated that sugar beets should average more than 12 tons to the acre, or it is a failure on the part of the farmer. He also said, proper cultivation of soil and caring for same, that from 25 to A 35 tons is only an average crop. crop of this kind is cheaper to raise than a smaller one. The reasons for failures are charged largely to- crop pests, brought about by not caring properly for the soil. "Farmers, change your crops frequently; use your barnyard manure, keep your soil clean and you will have better crops. Sugar manufacturers should encourage larger tonnage instead of more acreage. Success of on the farmer is due to the part of the consumer "of his products and the various factories," said iMr. Welch. was exA vote of appreciation tended Mr. Welch at the close of his discourse, by the club, for his most able way of imparting his many pointers for successful farming and stock raising. Mr. Welch The origin of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows is implicated in much doubt, and surrounded with considerable obscurity. As no original records are known to have been kept, its early history is mere conjecture, at best. All that is really known of it is limited to the last decade of the eighteenth and the first two decades of the nineteenth century. The purpose of the order is to associate and hold fellowship as brothers; a brotherhood that fosters love of country, and of family, benevolence toward the needy, sympathy for the distressed, and brotherly love for those in affliction. Many lodges of the order existed in England as early as 1790, but they held no official or fraternal relation with each other. Little is known of their activities due to their isolated condition. The first lodge of the order in America was oorganized in Baltimore, Md., April 26, 1819, by Thomas Wildey and was called "Washington Lodge of Odd Fellows." Wildey, a g mechanic, was born in London, England, in 1782, and had been in America less than two years when he organized the first lodge. In England he had been a member of the order and had advanced to the highest rank in its councils, passing through all the chairs from the lowest to the highest in less than three years. The first five members of the American lodge were all English mechanics who had been members in their mother country. The first association of Odd Fellows in Utah was formed in Salt Lake City, January 17, 1865, by members who had migrated from California. Out of this association Utah lodge No. 1 was instituted July 26, 1865, by Past Grand James Ellis, special deputy grand sire, appointed for that purpose, with $15.75 1922. Provo's Exclusive Jewelry House. 36 West Center St. Citizen: If you contemplate having plumbing installation, now is the time to do it. At the present prices of materials you can not get it any cheaper for the reason that all overhead charges are disregarded, which must all sooner or later be accounted for. Some may tell you they have no overhead, in which case it is either a wilful fabrication or else they don't know any better. Either case is a menace to the legitimate plumbing business and the public in general. If in doubt, ask your banker he knows. Good advice would be that you ally yourself with those who are trying to carry on the plumbing and heiting business with a high standard, methods which means looking after the welfare of the public health, by doing good work and furnishing the best of materials, not to save or steal all you can out ot a job, but to "Build better than they knew." The legitimate plumber is one of the biggest assets any city can have they are more essential for the welfare and good of its citizens than any craft known in these modern 8 t imes. Remember, good citizens, help to keep up the standard of your plumbing it needs your protection. Remember, too, that the best job skill can do, will not last forever, so get the best all the time, then you ave building up your city and making it a better place in which to live. THE H. G.
