None of the judges were connected with The The large number of separate titles for each picture submitted made the task of selecting the most appropriate title difficult for the judges in some instances. For example, on Picture No. 1G the titles "John Chinaman and a Few Others" and 'Jack I'ots" were submitted, as well as some others. "Jack Pots" might very properly apply as a title but the picture showed a Chinaman in the background and "Jack Pots" didn't include him while "John Chinaman and a Few Others" did. In cases of this kind, the judges selected the title which fitted the entire picture in all its details. In only one case was it impossible for the judges to agree on a tingle title as best, and that was in picture number 41. If a contestant submitted the title, "Now and Then" or "The Flight of Time Picture No. 41, that contestant's rating on that question will be just as high regardless of which title was selected, since the judges ruled that either title wa3 equally applicable. For each of the other pictures, only one title was selected by the judges as leing the best. A conscientious effort was jnade to select those titles which best fitted every detail of the picture and, since every contestant had an opportunitj' to submit five titles for each picture, this selection will give everyone an equal chance. Early Monday morning, a large force of clerks will begin to go over all the replies submitted and will mark each contestant '3 answers in accordance with the ruling of the judges regarding correct titles. The person submitting the most complete list of correct titles, as listed below, will be awarded first prize, the erson with the next largest correct list will receive the second prize arid so on until all the prizes are awarded. The contest manager of The n urges all those who submitted answers to the contest to be patient, as there are several thousand replies and each one will be- examined with the utmost care in order that all who devoted their time to the work may have equal consideration. It is hoped that the work of checking will be completed withintwo weeks, and in that case, the names of the winning contestants will be published in the n issue of The of March' 26th, or as near that date as posHerald-Kepublica- n. Italy is said to be the cheapest of the countries at war in which to live cheaper even than neutral Switzerland. Hotel rates are still reasonable and house and apartment rents are even lower than they were before the war. Food prices have not increased as much as in France, Germany and England. This last mentioned condition is due mainly to the laws prohibiting the exportation of all foodstuffs, which in a measure prevents speculation and corners iji the market. It is pointed out that Italy is still largely an agricultural country and produces all she eats, except wheat. to the general belief, water, notContrary wine', is the national drink of Italy.
