Show " THE MIDVALE SENTINEL, MIDVALE. UTAH Friday, April 2, 1965 Page 6 An Prune with .... Goal in Mind m SOCIAL When a person picks up prun ing shears to start pruning, he should have a constructive ob-jective in mind. Then he should keep this objective in mind with he makes. What should these objectves be? You should prune to balance the tree iK- nn f ftlimmifo V Ul OIIIUU, It 111 HI U IV rlnGoaCAl uvu, wkv,u injured, or dead branches; remove crowded or interfering branches; keep the plant in bounds for the area intended: remove weak branches; or to produce top quality and quan-it- y of bloom or fruit. Horticulturists tell us to prune plants so that they maintain that natural shape". , Fruit and shade trees and late blooming shrubs, such as Rose of Sharon, should be pruned in the late winter or early spring. Flowering trees, such as flowering peach or apple, and spring flowering shrubs like forsythia, lilacs, or bridal wreath should be pruned after the plant gets through blooming. A few bouquets pruned off while the blooms are at their best will help to liven up your home and won't injure the plant. Earlier pruning will not injure the plant but you will cut the blossom buds off with early pruning. Spring flowering plants set the blossom buds in June and July for the next year All types of evergreens and deciduous plants can be pruned. either upright or Junipers, can be prostrate varieties, pruned several times a year. Avoid pruning and plants, however, in late summer or early fall because such a practice will stimulate new growth that could be subject to winter injury. Final tips: keep an objective in mind when pruning, keep pruning shears sharp, never stub off a branch but cut back to a side branch, keep vigerous growing shrubs down by removof the older and ing higher branches by. cutting off at ground level.
