Show City's Future Bright, Mayor Tells Chamber Midvale's best future is ahead of it" was the opinion of Mayor Beckstead to Henry given Chamber of Commerce members Wednesday noon. Chamber members held their first luncheon at their new meeting place, the Amvets Club on State St., and held discussions of several civic matters. The mayor reported that he reached his opinion regarding Midvale's future after consultation with officials from other Utah cities and with men from the Highway Department who are in contact with many communities. In his talk Wednesday the mayor reported progress in a number of directions. He has been informed by the Highway Department that it expects to let a contract by the first of the year for rebuilding Center St. from Allen St. to West Jordan. By that time, the differences between the D. & R. G. and U. P. railroads and the Department Highway would Christmas Bargains 6 Transistor Monopoly Radio Reg. $8.95 Reg. $4.98 595 Noreico Casco Toothbrush Electric Razor Electric $188 $88 1 Yincenft Drug Open Sundays 10 21 N. Plans for Center St., the mayor reported, provide for a traffic light at llolden St. and possibly at Locust St., which will become an access road to the freeway interchange at 7200 South. He said there will be no left turn from Center St. at Stagg St., nor at Hansen St., but there will be right turns permitted at these points from the westbound lanes. The Highway Department will provide access from downtown Midvale and from the west to the freeway interchange at 7200 South over Holden and Locust Sts.,- but will not extend 7200 South (Sugar St.) across the Jordan River bottoms to the west side of the valley. Both railroads will use the same trestle over N. Main St. at about 800 North, and the re maining single trestle will be widened to eliminate the existing narrow, dangerous underpass. After considerable study, the Highway Department has accepted Midvale's request for improving drainage from the State St. underpass by agreeing to lay a new gravity sewer down the railroad right of way to Center St., then down Center St. to the river. This work will be accomplished after the railroad tracks are removed from the street and before the new paving is laid. Mayor Beckstead reported that the schedule of the Highway Department calls for letting contracts sometime next spring for the Center St. and Wasatch St. underpasses, with construction of the Center St. underpass to be done first. Sixth Ave., which is schedulat the Rio ed to be dead-ende- d Grande tracks and the freeway, will remain open as an access road during the period when the underpasses at Wasatch, Center, and Sugar Sts. are un der construction. He gave as surance that only one underpass will be constructed at a time, as the blocking of more than one street would create a fire hazard because fire trucks could not move readily. S. Allen St., which now intersects Center St. quite close to the Rio Grande tracks, will be kept open, but the intersection will be moved farther west, requiring the purchasing of a - You flic' MdvakScntind Friday, December 13, 1963 small restaurant and one home to provide necessary right of Ski Club In vi m; IMG way.
