Show THE Ml D VALE Page Three Friday, October 10, 1958 West Jordan Mrs Dean Bateman, Reporter Phone: AM Jerry Nerdin, a son of Mr & Mrs Boyd Nerdin, Bingham, has returned to his classes at the West Jordan Junior High after a stay in the St Mark's Hospital. Jerry was severly burned about a month ago when he attempted to light a fire in the basement of his parents' home. He was com pletely enveloped in flames but had presence of mind enough to roll on the floor to extinguish the flames, probably saving his life. Jerry's father is a vice president of the West Jordan Junior High PTA. Haun Wixom spent the past week end visiting friends and relatives in Burley, Ida. The West Jordan school has inaugurated its program of semblies for the year. They will be held each Friday throughout the remainder of the school term. The first one will be held this Friday under directioin of student advisors. Jack Bowen and Mrs Pearl Millerberg, and will consist of an individual orientation program for each of the three grades. The school lunch program started last Monday under direction of Mrs Victoria , Showell. Mr Jenson have & Mrs Marv returned to their home in West ' ' Jordan from a trip to California. Dimar Hogan's Sunday School class of the West Jordan Second Ward enjoyed a bowling party this past week. The boys, who attendance had attained a 100 record, were guests of the girls who fell short of the goal. Janet Finlayson and Milo Pearson, who are members of the University of Utah marching band, will go with the band to Berkeley, and the band, dressed in brand new uniforms, will also perform. The band has rated among the top ten of its kind in the United States for the past several years. Plans are in the formative stage for an interesting Halloween party to be held at the West Jordan Junior High School under direction of the PTA. As in other years, the aim of the committee is to counteract vandalism by enthusiasts. Ef forts in the past have almost entirely eliminated the community nuisance. West Jordan First Ward Relief Society held their opening social Tuesday, Sept. 30. Jean Westwood, an accomplished story teller, was also on the program. Esther Leak is recuperating from a heart ailment at her home in West Jordan after an extended sojourn in a Salt Lake hospital. Myrna Palmer underwent surgery to remove a growth from her eye last Friday. She is at home now and recovering from the operation. Funeral services for Carl F. Esperson were held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Midvale First Ward chapel. Mr Esperson is the father of Mrs Glen (Virginia) Benson, West Jordan. Several sportsmen from West Jordan traveled to the Farming-to- n Bay area for the opening of the duck season Saturday, Oct. 4. Among the many nimrods who took to the marshes and lakes were Dean, Dale, Kent, and Spence Bateman, Ricky Spratling, Bill Kidder, and Don Harrison and his two sons, Cloyd and Verl. Mr & Mrs Verl Harrison were week end guests of Mr Harrison's parents during the opening week of duck hunting. Glen Turpin has enrolled for the year at the Utah State University, where he is majoring in Agriculture. He will reside in Logan until the end of the school year. Mr & Mrs J. Spencer Bateman and daughter, Holly, Bountiful, accompanied by Mr Bateman's parents, Mr & Mrs D. LeRoy Bateman, spent last Sunday enjoying the beautiful autumn scenery in our canyons. The two couples completed a trip around the Alpine Loop. On Friday, Oct. 3, Carma Bur- kinshaw celebrated her 10th birthday at the home of her par ents, Mr & Mrs LaMar Burkin- shaw. Carina's sister, Karen, and Mrs Larry Bur- her sister-in-lakinshaw, assisted her mother with hostess duties. Theme of the event was "Circus Under the Big Top." Fifteen small guests en joyed games and refreshments. West Jordan Third Ward has recently reorganized the YWMIA. Outgoing officers include Orpha Beers, president, June Booth, manual counselor, Sharon Mer- tin, activity counselor, and Joan Wall, secretary. New officers, who assumed their duties last Wednesday, are Rozella Atkinson, president, Norma Bateman, man ual counselor, Sybil Bateman, ac tivity counselor, and Grace Paul sen, secretary. Several members of the old board have remained and will continue to assist the Opening meeting for the Archi bald Gardner Camp DUP members will be held at the Pioneer Hall, West Jordan, Thursday, Oct. 16, at 1:30 p.m. Hostessing the meeting will be officers.
