Show universal Microfilm 0. P. Box 147 Corp This 'n That: By Jay An old friend, far away but not forgotten, on learning of our move west, writes: "You certainly have more of the spirit of adventure than I. Riding our local transportation system is thrill enough for me." He's spent the past 25 years or so fighting Chicago traffic. We never lived in Chicago but we have ridden the "L" trains there on occasion, and the only thing we ever found to compare with them is the roller coaster out at Saltair! During the war, we knew a fellow who had a "soft" assignment at Great Lakes, but asked for sea duty because he felt he was losing the Battle of Chicago. Another splendid art contest, sponsored by the Chamber of Com merce, produced some outstanding pictures on the windows of Mid- vale business establishments. An idea as good as this one should be continued indefinitely. The stu dents did a wonderful job of ex pressing the spirit of Halloween in their paintings, and the merchants are to be commended for making their window space available for the occasion. The exceptions, in which Midvale City favored winners, were: Alvin Keddington for county clerk; George Beckstead for county sheriff Frank E. Moss for county attorney; Richard C. Howe for 17th district representative; Judge Wor-thefor the supreme court; and Clarence E. Baker for judge of the third district court. n Midvale also gave wide pluralities against the reapportionment amendment and the two referen-dum-s regarding state junior col- leges, all of which were soundly beaten in the state-wid- e voting. Best vote getter in Midvale was Sheriff George Beckstead, who polled 1312 votes to top all other names on the ballot. In every instance, Democratic candidates carried the city of Mid vale, and by margins in several cases of 2 to 1. For Midvale, it was a record vote r for an election, with 1960 voters going to the polls or casting absentee ballots. In some of the precincts, the Tuesday vote exceeded to last presidential election. In precinct 318 (First Ward), the election officials reported 509 persons cast their ballots out of a total registration of 547, indeed a record percentage. One party worker, checking at 7 o'clock to get out all voters possible, could find only two names to call, and on phoning their homes was informed by the children that "Mommy and Daddy aren't home they went to vote." In No. 317, 352 voted out of 465 registered; in No. 319, 649 out of 810, and in No. 322, 450 out of 578.
