Some sieges I can deal with quickly, but others, I admit, take more drastic treatment. However, I'm winning, for each year the bouts become fewer and of shorter duration. 'You see, I once was a gardener. My nails were broken and dirty, my hands calloused and grubby. My arms were chopped, scratched, and my hair and dry. But my croci vere the first to bloom each spring, and my iris would have delighted an expert! My perennials were both abundant and sturdy and my annuals were right there to take over when the earlier bloom died down. Only let me tell you a secret. A true gardener is a slave an addict! He will give up his vacation (who would give his yard the proper care?) He will even give up his bath during a drought rather than let his chrysanthemums dry out And, if it seriously came to a choice between the latest iris rhizome and Junior a new pair of shoes well, I shudder to think of the outcome! Every day I'd be up early, weeding, spraying, watering, or (and this is a trial few gardeners will own up to) trying to make use of the results of ell this fremied effort! For instance, I finally dug up my pansy bed. Pansies are like rabbits. Today you have two and tomorrow they're everywhere! And the dear little things have to be kept picked, too! I'd fill every bowl I owned and seek out every neighbor who wasn't likewisee inundated, but still, each time I'd step out my back door those sulky, staring faces would be peering accusingly up at me! Now, while flowers may become a burden at times, aH that's really required of you is to look at them. However, if you go in for vegetables, too, that's much worse! The produce must not only be picked or dug, but then it must either be eaten or stored for future use! It's never ending. I can't quite recall what made me decide to reform. It must have been a day, though, when I realized I'd not had any appealing apparel on for weeks. A time when I g, and I resaw all my garden clothes were membered that it took all winter before I began looking like a member of the feminine sex again. I'll never forget the wild sense of freedom I experienced when I bravely handed my husband a shovel and said, "Dig. It all goes out!" In one afternoon my outline for a "better way of life" was under way. Everything returned to greenery. Flower beds became lawn and borders were planted with shrubs. My only concessions to color were iris, which thrives on neglect, and flowering shrubs! True, I con never pass a flower bed now without a pang of envy, but such emotion is closely followed by a greater sense of relief that I'm not the one who must spray and car for it. Now I just watch my neighbors in their fury of planting, dividing, spraying, heeling in, or grubbing out. I re-ton the hammock in some piece of feminine frippery, glance complacently at my polished nails and leisurely pour myself a second cup of tea!
