In what was a near record for a primary, voters in Salt Lake county and throughout the state turned out Tuesday to elect candidates for the Nov. 6th general election. A total of 84,056 votes were cast in the senatorial contests as county voters started a Bennett-King and Lloyd - Jenkins battle for national office. In county races, it was the surprising strength of Marvin G. Jensen, West Jordan fight manager, which held the spotlight during the hours of tabulation following closing of voting places. Mr, Jensen ran up a total of 17,473 votes as he defeated incumbent W. G. Larson for the Democratic nomination for the two year commission post. Mr. Larson showed 13,787 in unofficial returns. His greatest strength was in the Magna-Huntarea, where he carried most districts by a wide margin. The race, which was punctuated with a good deal of inner-part- y fighting, was quite close in a great number of Salt Lake City districts. Mr. Jensen showed his greatest strength in the south county areas, Kearns and Granger. He had campaigned in Kearns on the promise of closing a county garbage dump which had been established near the area. In another hotly - contested er race, state senator Sherman P. Lloyd defeated Reed A. Benson decisively for the Republican nomination for the 2nd congressional district seat. Unofficial totals show Mr. Lloyd over Mr. Benson 45,158 to 29,398. Mr. Lloyd won all four of the j counties comprising the 2nd district (Salt Lake, Weber, Utah and Tooele). His largest margin was in Salt Lake and Utah counties. The Bennett-Le- e race, which had aroused considerable interest throughout the state, was also a decisive victory for the incumbent, Mr. Bennett. Latest totals showed Mr. Bennett with 69.782 and Mr. Lee with 47,253. On the Democratic side of the fence, Congressman David S. King piled up a heavy lead as he defeated Calvin J. Rampton for the nomination. State Senator Bruce S. Jenky ins was also a winner as he defeated Clinton D. Vernon for the 2nd congressional district seat. In Salt Lake county voting for state offices, King defeated Rampton, .24,323 to 7,079. Bennett topped Lee 30,114 to 22,550. Jenkins bested Vernon 22,685 to 8,305 and Lloyd outdid Benson, 32,000 to 20,134. In the Democratic race for state attorney general, Bryant H. Croft collected 26,285 votes as he lost to W. H. Henderson, j run-awa- e I W ' "l"l,,'.--33- P j J great-grandchil- 1 who received 42,472. With the exception of the commissioner race between Mr, Larson and Mr. Jensen, most Salt Lake county races were staged by Republicans. Newell Knight gained the right to meet incumbent county clerk Alvin Keddington in November as he defeated Roland G. Kaiser by a two to one margin. J. Elmo Ostler was elected over Glen T. James as the Republican candidate for county auditor. He will face David P. Jones in the final election. In the county recorder contest, Hazel T. Chase came out ahead of Delila R. Abbot by a large margin. She will contest the post held by Mrs. C. L. Jack. Dale R. Holt defeated Jay Sweet in the battle for nomination to the county surveyor post now held by Roscoe W. Bowden, Several statehouse contests in the Eagle - Advertiser area were also decided. On the Democratic side, Ralph C. Anderson won the 11th district nomination over Edwin T. Beck and will seek the seat held by Republican J. W. Carter. In the 19th representative district, Kay Allen, former Murray school teacher and present official of Model Credit (Voting, Page 6, Col. 3) OR ALL I I was principal in Murray from 1!I16 to 1918.
