Murray's Volunteer Fire partment had a busy week combating a rash of grass fires, Chief Deb Townsend reported Wednes- Prior to Sunday, telephone service to Kearns had been provided by the Murray exchange. Construction of the new building began In December, 1956. It took less than one minute to disconnect all Kearns telephones from the Murray exchange and place them in operation. Shears similar to ones used to prune tree limbs cut the lines connected to the Murray office. The work required about half a minute. The new system was then placed in service by several technicians who activated the dial switches connected to each telephone by pulling the "blocking tools". Each technician was able to energize several hundred telephones in one operation requiring only a matter of seconds. "Customers throughout the entire area will benefit from the new service," V. J. Twelves, manager for the company, saij.
