Show The Real Christmas Blame it on the season if you like. We won't. Or blame it on an effort to reduce inventory if you're a skeptic. We won't. Or blame it perhaps, on the fact that people are human and thoughtful and sentimental and eager to help. And we'll buy that theory. We've not a doubt in the world but that many other businessmen have repeated this same gesture many times. Certainly those who took part in this entire affair had done something similar before or they'd not have been so quick to respond, it's difficult to put in words the feelings of an editor who more or less stood on the sidelines and watched it all transpire. It would be impossible to put on paper the feelings of the parents. Most of you readers followed the episode of the little Murray tot who is dying of leukemia. It's been an interesting story if you had a heart, or a little girl, or had a friend who had a little child you knew In well. an was it fact, fairly interesting study in human nature even if you were as as Morgan, the pirate. It began in when the tot's mother 'phoned the Eagle to learn where she might get a Christmas tree in advance. Sandra was not too good a bet to make it 'til Christmas. From that beginning was launched a chain of events that to this writer has been a renewal of faith in human nature. Yes, a business friend of ours not only could supply a tree, but he'd give all the trimmings that go with one. And he'd throw in a assorted toys suitable for a old. flint-heart- ed half-doz- en Spirit... And another businessman took care of a mechanical train; another a cowgirl outfit; another a special doll. We accumulated a beautiful teddy bear from a volunteer-dono- r; tossed in a electric doggie from the Eagle. Assorted other gifts drifted in from sympathetic folks 'round Murray. Santa even took time off from a busy schedule to personally deliver all these things. And Sandra enjoyed an early Christmas complete with everything she'd wanted. It was all over Christmas Day. We were relaxing at home when the 'phone rang. It was one of the businessmen who had He'd already contributed to the wondered what sort of Christmas the little girl's brothers had received. Pretty meagre, we imagined - and a check revealed that to be true. So what did this businessman do? He took a basketball out of stock and a big hosiery and a wallet for Mom; socks for Dad, added an assortment of other gifts and candy - and played Santa himself so the whole family, not just Sandra, could join in the festive mood. The little tot for whom it all began unfortunately didn't realize this, for she was a pretty sick baby. But everyone else did and we likened him in our mind to a "modern day Santa Claus" when our friend drove away after delivering his gifts.
