Uranium is extracted from a yellow ore called "Caronotote" and the known deposits in Utah are in the Colorado River basin in Grand, Wayne, Garfield and San Juan counties. A number of Carnotite deposits (n Utah were mined during the war which at that time was a top war secret. Now after two years of peace, the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission says it will resume the purchase of uranium- rich Carnotite ores. In addition they say they have purchased the Carnotite ore processing plant built during the war at Monticello and actual processing of unramum concentrates will be started in 1949. Ores will be at the Monticello purchased plant this summer, and the high price of Carnotite should make it worthwhile for interested Utahns to take up prospecting for uranium. Finding the yellow, uranium- bearing Carnotite is no problem for the experienced prospector, as it is easily identified and is usually found on the surface or a few feet under the ground. Oddly enough, the richest Carnotite ore fids are usually as sociated with fossilized trees and dinosaur bones, the location of which often proves an important lead to uncovering valuable desposits. Experienced uranium prospectors no doubt have already start ed combing the isolated sections of southeastern Utah anxiously looking for ores from which more atomic bombs will be created.
