Show 4 THE MURRAY EAGLE by thunder, now was a good chance to prove his argument . . . No Help )y STANLEY COHDELL Associated DAY Newspapers WNU Scrvlre CANTRELL was He had thought he might find a solution to his J own problem by reading the stories in Peerless Weekly. But they proved a disappointment. Ex cept for a variety of backgrounds they all began and ended the same The heroine was either dark, light or medium, and always gorgeous beautiful, exotic, different, popular, sophisticated, aloof and desired by every man who so much as caught a glimpse of her. The hero was tall, tiiin, muscular, wealthy, athlet ic, fearless, Adoni.slike in build, handsome, yet humble in the pres ence of the heroine. The plots were always alike. In paragraph two it always became apparent that the hero desired the heroine, but first, of course, the heroine must battle with her emo tions, taste the fruits of a life wholly apart from the ordered, sensible existence which the hero offered her, become fascinated by some queer individual with chin whiskers, eccentric ideas and no money, and finally return to the hero, who saplike, had been waiting patiently, eager to have the girl of his dreams, whatever. Sickening! Ray gave a disgusted grunt and switched off his bedside lamp. Why couldn't some author knock off a story that was different? Ray glanced at his watch. That dizzy naturalist would be just about taking his leave from front porch. They would stand near the gate a few minutes, looking up at the moon, and then Ray had a sinking sensation in the pit of his stomach. Would Natalie permit him to kiss her? Probably. She was gone just about that far. Well, she wasn't going to get away with that. Not if she expected she could return to Ray. No, sir . . . Ray dressed hurriedly, ran a comb through his hair, tiptoed downstairs and let himself out into the clear, cool, night. The main street of liampstcad was deserted. Ray turned into Maple road, and hurried along under the shade trees. The fifth house was Natalie's and as he approached, Ray made out two figures standing by the gate. Drawing near he saw them merge into one, heard a faint scream coming from Natalie's lips. Then one of the figures drew away and started up the Ten-thirt- moon-floode- Hats Are the Most Intriguing We've Had for Many a So'""n By CIIERIE NICHOLAS Building the Rock Garden If gCi 1 street. Variously known as a "rock gar den" or a "rockery," any portion of garden, farmstead, or suburban lot which yields readily to landscaping with rocks, with a bit of water, and with plants suited to such locadelight to tions, is a never-endin- g the true gardener. The chief problem with which the gardener must deal, in this connection, is that of deciding just which plants are most likely to succeed under the existing conditions. No plants can be used for rockeries in all parts of the country; plants must be selected for the particular locality in which they are to be grown. CHOOSING THE SITE It happens, sometimes, that the gardener says, deliberately, "I will now construct a rock garden," and does so from the ground up, as one might say. As a rule, however, some contour of the land, some characteristic of soil or background. or some rocky outcrop provides both the incentive to the project and the basis for all calculations. If no such motivating factor exists, and if the rockery must be made "from the ground up," then great care must be used and the maximum of good taste exercised to make sure that the re sult has a natural and informal ap Poultry Vices Will Cause Serious Chick Losses.
