Murray grasshoppers are maturing in threatening numbers in numerous communities of the state and already a large amount of injury to alfalfa, small grains, and gardens has resulted. All infested counties are to receive bait materials through the federal government, providing they have a cooperative control signed memorandum of understanding this year. When the 1941 control campaign was launched this spring. Dr. Knowlton reported that 250 tons of bait materials wore in the state. This has been used, and in addition another 50 tons have been ordered by infested counties during the past two warned. mmo SERVICE Grasshopper control measures in many counties of Utah must be taken at once if the crop losses are to be stopped and laying of 'hopper eggs reduced to a minimum. Dr. George F.KnowI-ton- , extension entomoligst and state leader in grasshopper and Mormon cricket control, announced this week. Dr. Knowlton pointed out that weeks. "Unless farmers protect their crops from 'hoppers moving in from uncultivated land, considerable damage will be done later in the season while crops are still given," the entomologist LIFEBUOY Bat's the use of drudging State Leader Urges Need For Immediate Grasshopper Baiting 349 He stressed the effectiveness of the 'hopper control program during the past five years in Utali by citing statistics that show from one half to one million dollars have been saved annually in crops and, range forage in Utah, a worthy return on the effort and investment of farmers who have practiced control. Although a high percentage of crops have been saved throueh control measures, from one to two million dollars' worth are being lost annually. Much of this amount could be saved if an early and extensive baiting program were carried out in the infested areas.
