Danger of Water Contamination Pointed Out certain Utah community, in g area below the foothills, was receiving its culinary water supply from a district above where there was no sewer and quite improper waste disA a low-lyin- posal. According to Dr. Farner. of Provo, the sanitary eneincerine division of the State Board of Heath, discovered the condition through water analysis and gave warning to the people of the lower community of the danger. Most of the old residents scoff ed at the warning. They, and their fathers before them, had been using the water with no ill effects, so they said, and paid scant attention to the sanitarian or the water analysis furnished them which plainly showed contamination. But the sanitarian knew his business, whether the residents of the district believed It or not, and he determined to prove to that sewage from the dis- s trict in the several miles away could and did reach their water supply. Accordingly, following standard procedure In similar cases, highly colored but harmless dyes were deposited in flush toilets of several residences in the district on the higher land. Within a very few davs the coloring appeared in the drink ing water taps of the lower community and many people there thought they were being Poison ed. They were, but not by the dyes: the sewage from above was draining into the streams that fed their supply, thus subjecting them to diseases such as are carried by human foot-h.il- SVcftrciPS 3?.
