In every comedy-dram- a of that age, as well as in those which were wirtten for scores of years aiterwards, tne linker naa his place. Even as late as the last decades of the Nineteenth alcentury this picturesque, individunwashed though usually ual, persisted in his mending activities. The word "tinker"' long ago came to mean one who putters around, tightening a screw here, loosening a nut there, driving in a nail or two, and in general doing a makeshift job of repairing. The word soon became attached to a degenerate connotation embracing in part the idea of a rather low and dirty person whose work was very inferior and whose presence was quite undesirable. Speaking to members of the Alliance this week celebrating the tenth anniversary of its founding, Mr. Grimes said: "Thanks to the tremendous in fluence of the cooking pages, the special stories on menus, diet and kindred subjects, we are today the best nourished and healthiest nation on earth. "No longer are we a nation of eaters. Constant ly informed by the press, each year has seen better and better balanced meals on our tables, according to a survey we have completed among our 6,500 members in all parts of the country." Vitamins, proteins, starches, carbohydrates, just so many words a short while back, all get their due consideration from the housewife today, the grocers reported. Some of this information, largely in the case of younger women, came from home economics coursese in school, but the majority of it comes from the pages of newspapers and periodicals, Mr. Grimes declared. Publication of a new or different menu is quickly reflected in sales of the needed ingredients in the community, said the grocers. Many of the women appear at the stores carrying the published articles in their pursese. "The result of this remarkable public interest in the subject and the comprehensive service of the newspapers is a nutritional balance that only the wealthy could afford a few years back. Thanks to the printing press, it is available to every family today." h tear lonn: The program will include boxing and wrestling bouts with a battle royal and other special events. 24. ITS TRUE !
