Basic and precious metals valued at more than two billion dol lars have been mined since the first Utah discovery more than sixty years ago. The first mineral claim In the state was the West Jordan In Blng-baCanyon In September 1803, and the first Important gold production, lu the state, came from placer deposits In Bingham. Following closely upon the discoveries at Bingham came the findings at Alta, Park City. Tintic. Ophlr, Beaver County, Mercur, and the Silver Reef. A review of 1929 brings to light many notable events of more than passing significance. During the year a new dlvident record was e tabllshed when metal mines jmld out a total of $37,614,045 to stockholders. This Is nearly double the dlvident record of lfli8. It exceed ed any other state in the Union The record Is Indeed remarkable when It Is considered that It does not Include dividends of smelting which oiierate many companies mines In the atate. The value of the production of gold, silver, copper, lead and lnc produced by Utah mines Is estimated at approximately $85,000,000. This Is an increase over the pro duction In lft2S, which amounted to J79.722.000. This was largely due to the Increased copper production. In order of Importance copper has been the source of a large portion of the slate's mineral wealth The year 1929 has been one of the most successful for this Industry, During the year the Utah Copper Company paid the record total of $32,000,000 In dividends, $10,000,-00- 0 In wages and $32,000,000 In supplies and power. This great mining venture was not profitable nntll an outlay of approximately 123,000,000 had been made and It will now be a source of wealth for many decades to come as mining of the mountain hsi Jut begun. Silver and lead production of Utah has been an Important con tribution to the world's wealth since the first discovery dating back to the days of General Connor. Four lurge plants for refining these tubals have establlshd at Tooele, Garfield, Murray, and Mldvsle. During recent years an Increased demand for leud along with new methods of metallurgy have been an Impetus to producers and they have !een Important factors In promoting the silver-leaIndustry. Theae ores also contain gold, copper, xlnc. bismuth, antimony, araenlc, and teluriutn, all of wblch are considIx-e- n chiefly by the Bingham district which leads all others. Jauh and Utah Oitintlea Is the famous Tlnllc District, which Is noted for Its pro ductlon of sliver. Summit County KARL DANE is noted for Its two largt producers, ('ECU. B.
