This disease spread to many other states and has been a great source of revenue for the political doctor. Illinois, under Governor Lowden, found a remedy. Idaho is applying a similar remedy with hope of success. Governor Miller of New York is applying more drastic surgery, and Governor Maybe of our own state has prescribed similar treatment for our ailments. In closing let as say that California with an extremely aggrivating case - is asking its legislature this year to appropriate over $100. 000,000. Maryland, which was one of the finest system of Improved roads . la, the United States, if not the best; has consistently followed the prac tice. The original improved roads in Maryland were comparatively inexpensive, costing only what the tax payers were willing to pay for. In some cases the work entailed considerable grading and drainage, but in others it amounted simply to resurfacing the old turnpikes, which had already been graded and drain ed. Generally, the road built at that time were macadam, IS feet wide and 8 Inches thick. - Soon, the width was Increased to 14 feet. Later many 1 were widened still further, some very successfully, by adding concrete shoulders on each side of the exist Ing macadum.
