Malformations, The National Foundation-Marc- h oj Dimes , ..... Birth defects, today's greatest unsolved childhood medical problem, date back to the beginning of time as one of mankind's afflictions. Some of them are described in the Bible. In the first chapter of Revelations, verse 14 describes albi nism, a hereditary birth defect found in animals as well as in men: "His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire." Albinism is the absence of pigment coloring matter from the skin, the hair and parts of the eye. summoned and required to serve upon or mail to CLINE & JACKSON, plaintiff's attorneys, whose address is Milford, Utah, an answer to the complaint and file a copy of said answer with the Cleik of the above entitled court within 20 days after service of this summons upon you If you fail so to do, judgment default will be taken by against you for the relief demanded in said - complaint, which has been filed with the clerk of said court and a copy of which will be served upon you or mailed to you within ten days after service of thu summons upon you. That sentence bristles with medical terms unfamiliar to the layman, so let's take it apart and see what it means: a "structural" defect is a defect in one of the parts, or organs or tissues of the body. Some of these defects are visible harelip, the absence of limbs, or spina bifida ("open spine"). Some of these structural defects are NOT readily visible except through X rays abnormalities of the kidneys, the heart, etc. a "metabolic" defect is a chemical defect in one of the systems or processes of the body. These are hard to detect even by physicians, but their presence can cause mental retardation, diabetes and other conditions. "genetically determined" means hereditary, passed play a vital role in determining each shown here in blown-uwhich photo with wall charts that show chromosome p types and sizes. down from one generation to another. an example of an "environmental' influence that might produce a birth defect would be a drug, a virus or radiation which acts upon the mother while she is carrying the child. "embryonic life" is a term which covers the first three months of pregnancy, beginning immediately after conception. "fetal life" means the later life of the unborn child, from the fourth month after conception to the moment of birth. Birth defects present a problem for the individual, for fhe family and for our country because many of the persons affected are handicapped from birth or shortly after, facing an entire lifetime of disability. Only about 43 per cent, or two out of five, defective conditions are apparent at birth. The remaining 57 per cent create problems in later life. As the population increases, and as more infants are protected from childhood infec tions, the number of those who live to adulthood with disabling birth defects increases. The National Foundation-Marc- h of Dimes, the voluntary health agency which financed the development of the Salk and Sabin polio vaccines, currently attacks the problem of birth defects with the experience and methods gained in its successful fight to eliminate polio as a public health problem. The most important long-ranattack on the problem Is ge through scientific research, which, we hope, will find definite causes for many birth de- fects and, in time, preventives for these conditions. The most important immediate attack is through clinical research the seeking of new methods of patient care for those already afflicted with these conditions. Here is where results are already apparent. Through a nationwide network of 50 March of Dimes Centers, children who were bom with birth defects are being treated so that they might have a chance at useful, productive lives. .
