Show O Hilltop Times Ma, 2'i ?0 03 Snorts Chiefs massacre Eiagles in lopsided softball challenge by 2nd Lt. Caroline Wellman Hilltop Times staff The Eagles left the softball field red faced Friday afternoon Chiefs versus Eagles game at the base after an hour-lonfields. The red wasn't because of the sun though, it was more the shade of embarrassment after the Chiefs handed the Eagles a 21-- loss in seven innings. Maj. Gen. Scott Bergren, Ogden ALC commander, opened the game with an enthusiastic first pitch that flew high and wide of the plate, missing the catcher's mitt at the end of an outstretched arm. Bergren's pitch would only foreshadow the athletic prowess the Eagles brought to the game. The Chiefs, who hit first, got off to an early lead. After bringing one runner home, the Chiefs bench lobbied to end the game. "Let's quit while we're winning," commented one teammate, apparently unaware of the superior athletes waiting in the dugout for their turn at the plate. Eight batters later, the Chiefs lead was at five. The Eagles, apparently slow to start and perhaps shocked by the Chiefs' offensive opening, barely escaped a three-up- , three-dowinning. Stellar defense by the Chiefs prevented the four Eagle batters who came to the plate from runs any first the inning. during Appearing to gain momentum, the Eagle defense held the Chiefs to one run in the second inning, while the Chiefs defense couldn't keep the Eagles from bringing home three runners. It appeared as though the Eagles might be staging a comeback in the third inning, when they held the Chiefs scoreless. The Chiefs returned the favor in the bottom of the third, preventing the Eagles from bringing anyone home. "I thought turning two was illegal if we were over 40," Eagles' Steve Hoog directed at his bench as he walked his way from the base to the dugout, having been on the receiving end of a double play which ended the Eagles scoreless third inning. The fourth inning proved to be a repeat of the first, as the Eagles failed to answer any of the six runs scored by the Chiefs. Four of those runs came off a grand slam hit by Joe Stewart. In the fifth inning, the Eagles once again showed a glimmer of hope as they outscored the Chiefs one to nothing, bringBut realizing that the Eagles refused ing the score to 12-to give up, the Chiefs stepped it up in the sixth inning, outscor-in- fa soft-ba- ll g 5 I V 1 i i I .UKiKHF A I 7k ' ,.... The scoring frenzy continued in the seventh as the Chiefs scored five more times, despite mounting overconfidence. "I think a key to our success is understanding our opponent," explained Robert Koenigkramer. "General officers are smart. They like to prepare to conquer their opponents so we surprised them with this game. Unfortunately, many of their most stalwart players couldn't make it. Although they were all stars - in their day - it was to our advantage that some of their greatest assets were unavailable." 4. g the Eagles Charles Williams single handedly attempting to bring the Eagles back to life, swung big and missed big, resulting in a turn. He made no contact with the ball, complete 4-- 360-degr- -- UP TO -- in a rare show of the Eagles' defensive skills. The absence of certain Eagles from the line-uhelped, but the true key to our win was that Chiefs are always ready. Neither team had any real time to prepare, but we continuously sharpen our skills," he continued. "That preparation made all the difference." Seb Romano, Eagles player, congratulated the Chiefs on their win. "The Chiefs played a good game and should be congratulated on their victory. The game once again proved the old adage that old age and treachery will always overp come youth, skill and good looks."
