The base storm water drainage system leads to a series of ponds where water collects to evaporate, infiltrate into the soil, or to be released to flow to Kay's Creek or Fife's Ditch. These ponds are the base wetlands and provide fish and waterfowl habitat The ponds are places where we can walk or jog, where animals thrive, and where children can play. We don't often think that these beauties of nature or our collect everything that we to the on ground. put Sometimes we drop things in the street or in storm drains without even thinking of the consequences. Everything that hits the ground is either swept up by the street sweeper or washed into the drain to collect in the pfcnds. When someone throws down a cigaj-ettbutt, drink cup or other trash, these will eventually be washed or blown into the drains and carried to the ponds. Everything liquid that is spilled on thepave-men- t flows to the nearest storm drain and toward one of the base ponds. Any liquid other than fresh, potable water that goes into a storm drain is considered a spill and could lead to a violation of our base storm water permit Deliberately dumping oils or other wastes into the storm drain system can kill the plants and animals that thrive in our base ponds.
