Show 0 Hilltop Times 2002 February 7, Commentary Force faces new challenges by Chief Master Sgt. Bruce Brady 90th Space Wing Command Chief Master Sergeant Our Air Force has never i FX WARREN AFB, Wyo. (AFPN) before faced the challenges it now deals with daily. I After Sept. 11, our base was initially locked down and is currently at an unprecedented, sustained force protection level, which taxes our people and resources to the brink of exhaustion. We continue to deploy people in support of operations Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle. At the same time, we're tasked to keep protection levels up. It is time for us to call on our spirit and determination that makes our Air Force No. 1 in the world. First and foremost, we are airmen, not medical technicians, security forces members or crewmembers. From the ar force m OH Pomander nf 45433-500- 1 Berren com- manding general down to airman basic, we have to pull together as a team and fight this war. It is time for supervisors to frankly discuss with their subordinates, peers and other supervisors about the definition of teamwork and thinking outside your job. We need to take a hard look at what we do and prioritize according to changing missions and secui ity measures. You may discover some job processes are no longer necessary. With the permission of your leadership chain, get rid of them. It is time to assist other squadrons on base with manpower and resources. We recently deployed a very large number of our services and civil engineer folks. Commanders and supervisors now face difficult choices about closing facilities and curtailing services. I think we need to keep those services open, and, if possible, increase their hours to take care of our people. As a volunteer, you can get off work and go over to the fitness facility or family support center to help out for a couple of hours. It takes the entire team during these times to run all base facilities. It is time to accept the many retired military, spouses and family members who are stepping up to the plate. Don't turn these volunteers away; they are experienced and want to help. They can't carry a gun at the gate, deploy to the missile field or pull door guard duty, but they can work at the fitness facilities, answer phones or wait on customers. We need to tap this resource and make these people a part of our team. They are needed now more than ever. Lastly, it is time to care for our deployed members and their families. We are all part of the Air Force family. Sometimes hearing that out loud can get you through a dreary day, just knowing you belong to an elite group and a caring Air Force family. I came through the gate the other morning about 5 a.m. The airman checking my identification card was visibly cold. I told him, "I know you're freezing your buns off. I appreciate you and what you're doing out here. Keep protecting us." His face brightened and a smile appeared. A thank you goes a long way. He can be reached at Ext Illegal parking in work building 1A and parking here is atrocious. Those of us authorized to park in Lot 14 are often unable to find "legal" parking places. As a result, authorized and unauthorized many are double parking and receiving tickets from the buiiding manager. These tickets don't seem to deter the unauthorized, which is the crux of the problem. visiAdditionally, because the two-hod tor parking spots are by 6:30 a.m. and completely filled by 8 a.m., visitors have no choice but to illegally park in order to conduct business. Is there any way possible the building manager can be authorized to write a meaningful ticket that can't be ignored? Ql ur half-fille- 2k I just came from a parking lot and told mSecurity Forces to cite vehicles parked on sidewalks, blocking exits or fire lanes, and parking off paved surfaces. In this case, illegal parking forced people to walk in the streets and impacted the fire department's ability to respond. We do have a parking problem on base, but in most cases, there is sufficient parking within less than a block of these areas. I've asked building managers and SF to get a better handle on parking hazards. Parking tickets aren't just meaningless piece of paper that have no consequences. Driving privileges can be suspended or revoked on base for up to 12 months if a driver continually violates installation parking standards, and we routinely impose those suspensions. but many of us You're right, parking is bad make it much worse by ignoring the rules. I think youll see more people walking on base as we enforce the rules to help solve these safety concerns. Our parking lot expert, Staff Sgt Paul Rodgers, 75th SFSSFOJ, stands by to help work these issues with building man Granted, I'm a 61 year-old lady who simply works here for a living, but after it has taken on more meaning. I work in the hangar, with the aircraft. I've of been very proud that, but never always felt the really depth of pride that I do now. with that in mind, I want to say to all So, the people who work on and with all the aircraft we have on this base, THANK YOU. I love watching the and take off and do their testing. But I wonder if the pilots and others on those aircraft ever knew how many people watch them every day, loving all we see. You guys up there and the guys on the ground that make it all possible are the stuff that makes the United States a power to be dealt with. Our performance in Afghanistan is so stupendous that I wonder sometimes why we come to work without cheering every day. I'll be glad to retire someday, but not to leave this base. I'll continue to watch those aircraft and enjoy feeling the engines rock the air every day until I leave. Thanks for the opportunity to say thanks to the Air Force and Team Hill for the job do! they -- 9-1- 1, Hot building 4 We're having trouble with sir In Bldg. 1212. circula-fftio- n Employees In the center of the building deal with temperatures while those who sit near the windows are freezing because 90-degr- ee the windows need to be opened. This has gone on for several years and management and CE have both been notified, yet nothing has been done. Can you help us? You're partially right the system is old id it is bad ... but the Civil Engineers aren't ignoring you. The heating system in your building is more than 25 years old and, like people, we don't work as well when we get older. CE is installing new electronic controls within the next few weeks to replace the antiquated pneumatic systems. These new controls will give better heating equipment control and make us aware of specific problems in the system. Well monitor the temperatures daily until the new controls are if you open wininstalled. Here's a hint dows to cool the place off and it's already too hot because of poor heating controls, the heat will continue at maximum capacity. All we're doing is maximizing utility costs which reflects on your bottom line. I vote with you the parts are coming in and well fix it Our CE trouble desk, Ext stands by, ready to help resolve these issues. Kudo left work recently, I had the great pleasure of hearing the engines from our roaring over the base. The sound of that power always gives me a thrill.
