Stoker AFOSI Detachment 1404 The president of Smith & Smith Aircraft Company, a defense contractor, was sentenced May 10 for violations pertaining to Department of Defense contracts for military aircraft parts, many of them Hill AFB contracts. Raymond G. Smith, 60, of New Orleans, La., en- tered a guilty plea Nov. 28, 1990, to charges of conspiring to defraud the United States, making false statements to government agencies, violations of mvm the May 31, 1991 Hi!!top Times St Louis, Miss., and Wichita, Kan. r The investigation of Smith & Smith Aircraft Company and its president resulted in felony pleas by five individuals and one corporation to charges of making false statements, making false claims, conspiracy to defraud the United States, violations of the Act and misprison of a felony. The case also resulted in Mr. Smith and the company returning to the government of the Philippines aircraft parts valued at $150,000. The Filipino government had paid Smith & Smith for the parts but the materials were returned to Smith & Smith due to defects in the exportation documents. The investigation was conducted by Office of Special Investigations special agents Dan Jacksch and Wayne Leaders of AFOSI Detachment 1404, at Hill. OS I continues to collect, investigate and coordinate for action all allegations of intentional nonconformance to contract requirements by contractors. Anyone having information regarding suspected defective aircraft components, call OSI at Act and an antitrust violation for bid rigging. Mr. Smith was sentenced by senior U.S. District Judge Charles Schwartz Jr. to 27 months imprisonment and a $30,000 fine, according to U.S. Attorney Harry Rosenberg. Following his imprisonment, Mr. Smith will serve three years supervised release. In addition, he was ordered to pay $991,675 restitution to DOD. Smith & Smith Aircraft pleaded guilty on Nov. 28, 1990, to making false claims against the government. The corporation was fined $165,000 for those violations. The defense contractor company supplied spare parts for various military aircraft. The indictment alleged the company defrauded the United States by falsely daiming to have manufactured the parts, selling surplus parts as new parts, falsifying time records of employees and paying kickbacks to an employee of another government contractor in order Anti-kickbac- k Bay two-yea- Anti-kickbac- to obtain a subcontract. Mr. Smith and the company have admitted to defrauding, or attempting to defraud, the United States of $909,635. The corporation's headquarters are in New Orleans, with other facilities located in 777-185- k 2. BRIEFS Lunch programs announced! The Davis School District announced the sponsorship of a Summer Lunch Program beginning Monday and ending Aug. 16. This program will be held at Antelope Elementary, 1810 S. Main, and Hill Field Elementary, 389 S. 1000 E., both in Clearfield. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will also be a Summer Lunch Program held in conjunction with the Migrant Education Program. This program will begin June 10 and continue through Aug. 7. Free meals will be available to children enrolled in the migrant program and will be provided at West Point Elementary School, 3788 W. 300 N., in West Point. Colin PovoN nominated Run for Special Olympics WASHINGTON Colin Powell has been nominated by the president to serve a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. General Powell, the 12th chairman, accepted the nomination, a Pentagon spokesman said. The appointment to the second term is subject to Senate confirmation. The 1991 Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Utah Special Olympics will be held at Hill AFB at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
