It strikes without warning and can happen to anyone at any time. The only precaution w hich can be taken other than ridding premlaea of apparent fire hazards, is to have an adequate and alert fire depart-meriand our community has both. Most pra'seworthy In the vo.uniccr fire department's favor Is the speed with which it answers calls, gets the trucks out, mans them, and speeds to the scene of a biajte. In larger firemen centers where full-timare employed1 and stations are located In strategic places a longer time lapse oftimea oc curs, but not ao here, and this time lapse can be the differ ence between a small blaie and a disastrous fire. Gilford's firemen have an outstanding record in quick reaction to a siren's sounding. The firemen for the most part are employed In businesses close to the fire station and ca nbe on the truck within fractions of a minute after a call comes in. One wonders why men will risk life and limb to volunteer such for fire duty In a set-uas ours in which no salaries are paid. Most probably the real reason volunteer firemen keep at the Job year in and year out is a genuine desire to be helpful. All of us have had the feeling; when we have seen someone in distress, to do some thing about it. It is a hopeless feeling to stand by and watch misfortune and be unable to lthe t, lo-c- al e p to sidestep that feeling. When fire call comes in they race to put it out, as quickly as possible. And here our firemen truly give of their services. Their only remuneration is tha knowledge and satisfaction that they are performing' a necessary service and helping out people who have disasters. From all of us, a profound Thank You. And most of us showed our appreciation. In a very, very small way, by attending the Fireman's Ball last Friday, or buying a ticket to , annual affair even tho we it tend. The above editorial appeared in the Wasatch Wave, and Just about sums up the Milford situation as well as lleber City's We residents of this community owe a debt we can't pay to the volunteer firemen. They render service at all hours of the day and night to residents of the community, and their alert-net- s and proficiency have consistently held the Miiford fire insurance rates to a lowfJtire. But, according tomembers of the department, not all the folks here appreciate them. The s boys received several flat when they canvassed the town last week selling tickets to their dance. And some of the refusals came from residents for whom the fir laddies had unhesitatingly rendered extra services, above and beyond the call of the siren. Maybe they were a little short of cash when the boys were around making calls, and maybe they'll make an effort to show these protectors of life and property. In some other manner, that they do appreciate their unselfish loyalty and devotion to their community. It only comes twice a year, fellows. Firemen's Dance Week in the spring and Fire Prevention Week in the fall, but we DO appreciate you, all the year 'roundnot Just on the two occasions when we publicly pat you on the back. v- - oN ft -- k Hs n, " turn-down- law of ALLIE S.
