Air Force (22-6- ) entered the Top 25 this week for the first time in school history after winning its first conference title and setting a school record for wins. The Falcons still have a good shot at going to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1962, but will have to wait to end a postseason losing streak that is now 12 games. Air Force hasn't won a conference tournament game since 1990, when it was in the Western Athletic Conference, and is 5 in the Mountain West tournament. enColorado State tered the tournament as the eighth seed after losing seven of its final eight games, but shot 51 percent to get in position for another improbable 18-- Top-seed- 0-- (13-1- postseason run. Ronnie Clark had 14 points and Dwight Boatner added n for the Rams, last year's Mountain West tournament champion as the sixth seed. Colorado State will face the Mexico winner of UNLV-Nein Friday's semifinals. Colorado State shot 52 percent and ended the first half lead. The with a Rams kept it going in the second half, shooting during its opening 3 run. Matt Nelson put Colorado State up 17 with two free throws after Air Force coach Joe Scott was called for a technical foul, and Jon Rakiecki 3 at 13:40 with a made it from the corner. Air Force's Tim Keller hit the first basket of the second half from the post to cut Colorado State's lead to but it was six minutes before the Falcons mad another field goal. Air Force got its portion of the crowd excited with a 0 run that cut Colorado State's lead to 10, then Antoine Hood five-poi- 18-- 43-2- 25-2- 2, 7-- made it 2 with a with just over three minutes 50-4- left. The Falcons got it down to under two minutes left, but Boatner and on Rakiecki went 10 for-1- 0 free throws to seal the win. Keller led Air Force with 12 points. Air Force swept the season series against Colorado State for the first time since 1991, but the Rams were without Nelson both times. the He was back, although he wasn't much of a factor. Nelson did block Keller's drive on Air Force's fourth shot, but wasn't able to challenge many other shots because he had to move out on Air Force center Nick Welch, a 45 percent shooter. Colorado State also tried too hard to get Nelson the ball on offense, with four of its nine first half turnovers coming from forcing the ball into the post. Nelson finished with 10 points. The Associated Press six with just ot Tye Smith Sports Writer After posting qualifying marks during the indoor track season, seniors Nellie Hammons and Katie Decker will represent the U this weekend at the NCAA Indoor National in Fayette-villChampionships Ark. Hammons will be making her second trip to nationalsshe qualified for last summer's outdoor NCAA Nationalswhile Decker will be making her first trip. Hammons, one of the most dominant runners in the history of the U, set another school record last weekend in the run. At the Notre Dame Last Chance qualifying meet, Hammons shaved a full two seconds off of her previous time of 2 minutes, 8 seconds to finish with the nth-beprovisional qualifying time in the country. "I think I'm peaking at the perfect time," Hammons said after posting her impressive time of 2 minutes, 6.29 seconds. "It's evident in my times because they get faster and faster each race. Hammons, who won every event she entered but one this year, was quick to attribute her recent success at the qualifying meet to her ability to stay with the pack, letting the pacesetter do most of the work at first. In many situations this year, Hammons has been the dominant runner, meaning there is rarely someone to pace her. Hammons explained that with higher-calibcompetition, similar to what she will see at nationals, she will be able to stay with the pack "I cut 2 12 seconds from my time last weekend mostly because the pacesetter helped me find my race," she said. "Before last weekend, I had been running ahead of the pack. I'm looking forward to running in a pack again this weekend because these are the best athletes in the country to run with." The other Ute who qualified for nationals is the Utes' top high jumper, Katie Decker, who earned a spot at nationals earlier in the year with Got a bone to pick? All (J) Write letters to the editor: LimeLight 400 e, a provisional height of 5 feet, 11.25 inches. Decker has never attended nationals before, but coming off the best season of her collegiate career, she is as ready as she will ever be. "This will be the toughest competition Katie has faced," said U head track coach Lisa Archer. "But with that said, this is the best season she has posted. She has waited a long time to get to the NCAA Championships and is ready to compete." Decker views her qualifying for nationals as the culmination of her career as a collegiate athlete. Decker won almost every competition she entered on a regional level this year, and regardless of how she performs at nationals, her year has been an undeniable success. "I'm really excited to compete this weekend," Decker said. "It's even more special because it's my senior season and I've spent a lot of time working up to this." "My goal is to set a new personal record," she continued, "and to place high enough to earn All America honors." tsmithchronicle. utah. edu myself is to run my best, and I don't ask any more.
