I didn't get a press kit. AH I have is the music on the album to go on. But I am pretty proud of my self because, well, I think I was still able to figure it out. Please hold your applause until the end of the review.) Bui first, for the uninitiated, John Vanderslice used to be in the band ME Ultra, one of the better bands you probably havent heard of. But when it split up back in 1999, he followed the path trod by Sting, Bjork, Cher and Limahl going solo only he kept Ms full name because who wants to listen to a band called John?, Always celebrated for his frank and clever hi ics, Vanderslice sounds less like Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel than Colin Meloy (Hie and even more than, oh, let's say, limahl (Kajagoogoo). But so what's this Cellar Door all about, you're asking? My first due was the album's title. As anyone who's seen "Dannie Darko" movie of all time) knows, "cekar door" is only like, trie third-bethe most beautiful combination of words in the English language. Hmmrn. But feen ""Promising Actress" cant stop singing about "MulhoHand Drive" (another great 2003 release). And "When H Hits My Elood seems pretty eerily reminiscent of Darren Arcnofi-iry'masterpiece, "Requiem for a Dream It seems to me that Vanderslice has broken out his time machine once more, with his sights set on Hie Tower Theatre, circa faU 2001, Want more proof? Well, that's pretty much all fve got. But bear in mind, I don't get out much. Somesf these songs might br about "JVIy Best Friend's Wedd.mg"0T"Blue Crush" and I wouldn't knew it What I can S2y is this: John Vanderslice, whatever Ms irttentsons,' k has churned out yet another solid latch of slightly twisted indie pop that ought to appeal to anyone discerning enough ts.be reading EED Magazine. ..'.v'..; .' i T RED assistant editor Seating Blue HourAlchemy split EP Lumber Form of Rocket The Shins 14- Chutes Too Narrow 33. (Though granted, it did see U.S. release last February.) So what little goodies do the good folks at Domino have in store , for those (like me) who hare been patiently waiting for an equally EP of remixes by How about a inspired follow-up- ? Console, loopspodi, Four Tet and Manitoba? Urn, is that all you got? Well, uh, OK, but you'd better be working on something new. Billing two of the tracks as Console remixes is a bit like billing The Joshua Tree as U2 featuring the Edge he's already a member of the band. And who's this loeprpool fellow, you ask? WeS, he does the electronics for the Tied & Tickled Trio, just one of the Notwist's Markus and Micsh Adher's mary, many side prolects. (It would take class just to keep up with s3 of them,) a So besides the relatively uneventful, prewoush tenrekased ambient buck "Red Room," the only real leap out of the semi incestuous is with the Four Tet and Maritoba remix of German electro-po' Greetings Will Sa Master and Everyone 1.
