Show rather than emotion. THE RECRUIT continued from page Farrell doesn't have any speeches, but is also in the position of a talented actor with no material to work with. I'd like to believe there's another twist: Farrell and Pacino infiltrated the set of an awful movie to study how it was made and avoid making such mistakes in the future. But such an easy excuse could only be found in a movie. R11 amazing stuff when not given the opportunity and permission theme going on in the series right new unless the film isn't playing, that is. "You think you know me?" he asks several times. He delivers his Lines with conviction, but the lines are so ridiculous that they inspire laughter jeremyred-mag.co- m would not have been incorrect and Cold play would be rock in' on a Monday. Lou thinks they sound like U2, brt Jamie says lead singer Chris Martin is dreamy and does not sound like Dave Matthews despite what others may believe (which isn't to suggest that Dave Matthews sounds like U2, or vice versa). And the other director's films are boring and pretentious. The film is about a blind boy who gets a job tuning musical instruments. Part of the University of Utah's Film Front series, Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the U's Orson Spencer Hall (next door to the union building) filmfronthot-mail.coauditorium. for more info. FEB S Cowboy Mouth Cowboy Mouth is a mix between a jam band and type music. Go see them and some other folks play the Zephyr, 301 S. for West Temple, dial more information. 355-CLU- B m j RABBIT continued from page RIO those who try to escape. "Rabbit-Proo- f Fence" serves as excellent political commentary, showing the harsh reality of racism. Neville practices eugenics, and speaks of the natives' perceived inferiorities as if they were obvious facts. He does what he does in the name of saving the people he views as savages, but he ruins many lives though his actions. One such person is Moodoo (David Gulpilil), an aboriginal tracker who knows the land better than any white man and is employed to track the girls as they try to return home, which is 1,500 miles away. Moodoo doesn't seem particularly eager to complete his mission, probably because his own daughter is being held and "reformed." Although, after serving a probation term, Moodoo is free, his daughter isn't. Director Phillip Noyce scends the basic political nature of the film and turns it into fine filmmaking. With "The Quiet American" (which will see wide release in February), starring Michael Caine in a political story set during the Vietnam war, Noyce has made two very important films in the year 2002. While his previous work has included several Hollywood thrillers, 2002 shows that he has the ability to create art instead of simply entertainment. Christopher Doyle's cinematography captures the beauty of the Australian outback, giving the land a strong presence to make it clear why the kids don't want to leave it. The unknown actors also give impressive performances. As Molly, Sampi has the most screen time and communicates her character's struggle with great skill. The younger actors show their characters' innocence and naivete. Branagh, the only name actor, creates a character who claims to heal in the name of hatred and drives himself to Nazi-lik- e beliefs in the name of this false healing that's supposed to be moral. jeremyred-mag.co- WATER continued from page Rll laughed during that scene. "Woman's of Water's" best plot element by far is the crazy old woman whom Ryo calls "Mom." She's one of the best crazy old women in the infinite history of stories with crazy old women. Ironically, she's the most comprehensible and likable character in the film, the mysterious one who the others speculate about but who is less of a mystery to the audience. The relationship between Ryo and "Mom" proves far more interesting than that between the two main characters. If you've gotten this far in the article, my opinion must mean something to you, so I'll tell you "Woman of Water" is worth seeing for its beauty alone. But I'll also say this: The film could be summed up in its sex scene undeniably one of the most beautiful ever, but without any motivationlet alone emotion behind it. It might leave you feeling a bit cheated. rachaelred-mag.co- x.itjuiMbH: I January 30, 2003 I RED Magazine h-a- iil ill ilk" MM , liVWr - '" r - i ; ffYlti Lrl'Itlflli'frlfJ ittMHwtf Rl2 - - J- I i- yr '" r-- rr ... rr-- 4 ''"!TOP'r- ' |
