The genie came next to the U student, and asked for his one wish. "Fill it with water," the U student quickly responded. Though a little brash and over the top, this sums up my annoyance for anything having to do with BYU since coming to the U four years RORY BRUNNER 11 Chronicle Sports Editor Tn think there's a fitting joke to lightheartedly sum up ray disdain for the ways of our exiled neighbors living in Happy Valley on the campus of BYU. A genie came to both a student from the pious Y and the scoundrel-infeste- d U, granting each one wish. The BYU student thought for a second (which was no easy task, considering the Y student had never made any of his own decisions). After days upon days of tMnking, the student said, "Well, golly gee, I wish the entire Happy Valley was I i- 1 - J , !rv,.v The UtahBYU match-u- p fvV - 5- - - V' y.kil! ;i a year ago came down to the game's last three minutes. UTES continued from page S3 149 yards and three touchdowns in one half. But in the second half, Utc fans looked on as everything crumbled. Air Force scored 10 points in the third to close the gap to just 10 points, and it continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter. Two impressive touchdown drives the last of which coming on a pass from Chance Harridgc to Don Clark with 0:17 seconds left gave the Academy its first lead of the and another U comegame at back attempt came up short. The Falcons forced six turnovers on the afternoon and, in the third and fourth quarters, shut down the Utes' running attack. The win kept the Falcons undefeated and jolted them into the Top 25. San Diego State 36, Utah 17 The wheels began to really come off during Utah's trip to Southern California. The Aztecs fell behind early, but the Utes failed to hold on to yet another lead. Aztec quarterback Adam Hall threw for 294 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Not known for a particularly outstanding defense, the Aztecs shut down the U rushing attack, limiting Warficld to only 44 yards and keeping him out of the end zone. Sophomore quarterback Brett Elliott made his starting debut and looked impressive in completing several passes down the field, but he was also picked off three times, one of which was returned for a score by SDSU cornerback Ricky Sharpe. For the Utes, it wasn't just the loss that was embarrassing. The Aztecs came into the contest winlcss, having dropped their first five of the season. It was the Utes' second loss in two conference games and put them in an early hole in the Mountain West race, a hard hole to crawl out of. Colorado State 28, Utah 20 The Utes' tailspin continued with their fifth straight loss, this time at the hands of eventual conference champ Colorado State. Though dominant statistically, the Utes couldn't put together many scoring drives while allowing the Rams to methodically build a comfortable lead. A late touchdown attempt was tipped away from Utc receiver Paris Jackson in the end zone as the Rams held on for the win. The Utes rushed for 216 yards as a team, but it just wasn't enough. 20-ya- 30-2- 6, high-power- ed road against New Mexico. Brett Elliott continued to improve, tossing four touchdowns on 440 yards passing, and Utah held a lead late in the game. But the Lobos tied the game with just 0:46 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, and the Utes stalled out in overtime. The loss was their sixth straight and it officially eliminated them from bowl contention. Utah28,UNLVi7 drought, the Utes finally put a stop to their losing streak, topping the UNLV Rebels at for just their third win of After a Rice-Eccl- two-mon- th cs the year. Elliott, who had yet to win since replacing Lance Rice in the starting line-ucontinued his rapid improvement in leading his team to victory. He completed 18 of his 30 passes and threw three touchdown passes, while Peroulis and Warficld combined for 205 yards on the ground. Paris Jackson, who over the course of the year began to establish himself as the go-t- o p, ago. I cannot conceive of how BYU students can actually look themselves in the mirror every day and feel good about going to their version of "an institution of higher learning." Isn't higher education an oxymoron when restrictions are placed see CRUKNR, page S11 ' " " New Mexico 42, Utah 35 (OT) In another game the Utes probably should have won, Utah put plenty of points on the board but the defense just couldn't bail the team out on the - guy in the passing game, grabbed a pair of touchdown passes. Utah 23, Wyoming 17 After enduring almost a full season of bad luck, the Utes finally received a bit of good karma when they travelled to Laramie, as they finally saw the rolls and bounces go their way in an otherwise sloppily played football game. In getting their only winning streak since the first two weeks of the season, Brandon Warfield ran for 164 yards and two scores. The game was close throughout, as the lead changed hands a few times. Utah held an early 3 lead before the Cowboys stormed back with a pair of touchdowns. Midway through the fourth quarter, Warfield scampered two yards to give the Utes a lead. They later added a field goal and, despite two Elliott interceptions in the end zone and a fumble by Peroulis at the Wyoming d line, the defense took care of the rest and they came out on top. Two straight wins with just one game to go gave the Utes a chance to end a disappointing season on a respectable note. cbellam y'(chronicle, utah. edu ww wapiiP 14-- snw ij&sm five-yar- v, I At 'J r it i X 19-po- sik- - V J L: : I ' ct;i t i j t 5 J-- j;, Vi"' ail t f i i Utah has won v its last two games, one a 28-1- 7 win over UNLV. 3 Mi IL i i mnmntmrmdm |
