THE SUMMER UTAH CHRONICLE New Prof Hired, Other Profs Receive Honors Budget Cuts Hit Library's Print Version Periodical Collections "Some of them have already given us a lot of feedback, which will be carefully considered," she said. The library subscribes to approximately 14,500 journals in print form. Although the journals can be used by anyone from professors to undergraduates, the faculty members are usually the ones to request most of the subscriptions, Michalak said. "Most people go to journals for their research, because it is the most information out there," she said. But despite the budget cut, the library will still receive some additional funding. "The Marriott Library will receive $150,000 back from the e funds to help increase their electronic journal collection," said David Pershing, senior vice president for academic affairs. The Institute of Medicine is part of the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Cancer Policy Board addresses issues that arise in prevention, control, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. According to Mooney, the board considers issues that may be barriers to ensuring that patients receive quality cancer care or that may hinder research advances. "Studies produced by the cancer As part of its share of the U's budget cut, the U Marriott Library will have to trim $300,000 by July 1 in order to meet budget requirements. With the budget decrease, the Marriott Library will have e to let go of eight unfilled job positions, along with decreasing its collection of periodical subscriptions. "We have already sent notices to all faculty members on campus in hopes that they will help us decide which journals should stay and which we should eliminate," said Sarah Michalak, director of the Marriott Library. Michalak said the library wanted to let users know there is a careful process that goes into deciding which journals should be canceled, not just by looking at the number of times a journal has been checked out full-tim- te tuition-increas- see LIBRARY, page 4 cancer-car- e DOG DAYS OF SUMMER: 75U 1 delivery," she said. Capecchi Wins Top Award On May 9, President George Bush named Mario Capecchi, distinguished U professor of human genetics and biology, as a recipient of the National Medal of Science. Fourteen scientists and one engineer were named by Bush to receive the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest award for lifetime achievement in fields of scientific research. The honorees will receive the medals at a White House ceremony in the near future. Announced last week, the report stated that more than 87 percent of Utahns 25 or older have earned at least a high school diploma, compared with 80.4 percent nationally. When comparing residence with bachelor's degrees, Utah's 26 percent ranking also beat the 24 percent national average. "This is something the state should be proud of," said Olene Walker, Utah lieutenant governor. During a press conference where the results were announced, Walker described the close relationship between the economy and education borrowing Gov. Turpin, until his retirement this summer, served as associate vice president for the facilities management. He was in charge of several major building and renovation campaigns on campus, including the renovation of the football stadium and construction at Heritage Commons. During the Trustees meeting, the board also granted Turpin emeritus status. "There is more encouragement here for young people to go to school than in many other states," Pershing said. The fact that tuition in Utah is cheaper than the surrounding states might also be a factor, Pershing said. But along with the good news, the census also foreshadowed a potential problem the state will face. According to the census, there are a larger number of children under the age of 18 than ever before. Within 12 years, there will be an additional 600,000 students graduating from Utah's high schools. "Higher education will grow dramatically in the following years," Pershing said. "The challenge of the state will be finding the most efficient way to provide a quality education to these students at state colleges and universities." "We're trying to find possible trading patterns that look suspicious, but many of those patterns could not serve the public interest, but still not be illegal." In a competitive market, the price of the product is linked to its marginal cost. A trading pattern is deemed suspicious if that link is broken, said Bessembinder, who just completed his first year at the U. He doesn't believe serving on the committee will take away much time from his work at the U. "We've met in Washington, D.C., a couple of times, and we plan on having periodic conference calls, but the majority of the work will be done during the summer, when I'm not teaching," he said. Bessembinder was appointed in late April along with two energy analyst consultants, members of the Rice-F.ccl- 1414 South Foothill Blvd president for academic affairs.
