The ingenious location's daylight, like the cold in "Fargo," becomes a character in itself. Will stays in his room all day, looking at a world that seems to have stopped. Any dirty dealings must be perpetrated in daylight, and even if it's three in the morning, it's easier to be seen. Nolan brilliantly creates a dark noir thriller that, by necessity, takes place entirely in daylight. Robin Williams appears late enough in the film that it's possible to forget he's in it at all. When he does appear, it's a reminder of how good he is when he cracks down into a serious dramatic role. He, Swank and Pacino create a solid level of urgency with performances. While there are some obligatory action scenes, the film's real suspense lives in the realm of morality and guilt. Nolan's refusal to take the easy route and make a cheapened version of a foreign film gives him high status as a director to keep an eye on, because whatever he does next will probably be another surprise.
