Show THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE FRIDAY, MARCH x v f 1, i Si V., from Carisse Winegar, Bountiful High School in Bountiful, Utah, officially signed on to the U squad. Winegar brings a great amount of athleticism to the Utes, as she lettered in three sports with Bountiful. On the soccer field, Winegar acclaimed first team status as a forward for the Braves in 2001 and 2002. She helped lead Bountiful to a state championship in 2001. e Winegar also was a track athlete, and lead the team to a state helped title in 2001. She placed third in the hurdles and won the school's 2001 Award of Outstanding Performance. was actually Winegar recruited by Amy Winslow, former soccer coach, but Manning was "really leased" to have her in a U uniform. "The thing I like most about her is she's aggressive and very persistent," said Manning. "She seems to fight through adversity very well. Eventually thnt .'vf all-sta- . . .A val. High school, college and professional runners will be competing at the tournament in Palo Alto, Calif. This will be the final stage of the first season for coaches Brian Appcll and Lisa Collet. BASEBALL continued from page 9 series. k Utah is coming off a series against Southern Colorado, but the games will not play much of a factor since not one of the starters for the Utes pitched in the series. The key to defeating the Aztecs is piecing together an effort. "We need to keep swinging the bat well, play strong defense and have strong pitching performances to challenge them," Esmay mid-wee- all-arou- nd said. Jason Wylie is expected to start the first game, with Cheyenne Rushton and Mitch Maio pitching HASNAIN continued from page 9 me as if I had just cussed out her own son. Another man sitting a few seats to my left looked coldly at me, then turned to his young son and whispered something to him. think it was probably along the lines of, "Don't worry son, that loony doesn't know what he's talking about Karl is a wonderful basketball player." Oh yeah, say it to my face, 1 punk. That's good ol' Utah for you. Back in Seattle, it was a whGle different attitude when the Seattle Sonics played the Jazz in the Western Conference Finals in 1997. . m.iii.iniii.M-ilni- "Home of the Roundhouse Breakfast" The infamous "Jazzman was there for Game 7 in Seattle. During the entire game. Sonic fans sitting a few rows up from him yelled and screamed at him like he was the devil himself. After the game, they chased the man 30 times around the Key Arena with broken beer bottles. Come on, it's kind of funny, isn't it? I admit, that's a little messed up, but one thing's for sure: the Jazzman knows to this day who those fools were rooting for. In a less violent manner, I would love for Jazz fans to yell at me when they notice that I'm cheering on every Sonic basket. I'm not advocating, however, that sporting events in Utah turn into marathons of violence and vulgarity. But if, wYou suck, Maloae is equivalent to vulgarity, there's something wrong with this place. The point is that it's not fun to act as if I'm watching a Jr. Jazz game, where people become careful not to hurt anyone's ings, on or off the court. Rightfully so, I might add. However, once you start getting to the college or professional level, rooting for your team in an animated way becomes part of the game. Look at those crazy Seattle fans in regards to baseball. Superstar Ken Griffey jr. had only started to discuss the possibilities of playing for another team, and the death threats started to roll in. Death threats, people for leaving the team. Most of them were coherent, so I tend to believe there were no drugs involved. Look at the emotional level of attachment here. Griffey is arguably one of the greatest players ever in the game, but instead of appealing to him to stay in the city, the fans threatened him with his life. Don't worry, it was all talk. Nate Weese will attempt to extend his hitting streak, which is currently at 22 games. Adam Castleton and Donnie Saba have been playing very well, and players like Brett Baldwin are coming up and finding their stroke as well. In the bullpen, Ryan Reisbeck has provided great relief and Clay Westmoreland showed a lot against Southern Colorado. Doug Mackay and Sean Overholt played very well against Southern Colorado and could be called upon if the Utes' starting pitching gets into trouble early. The Utes will need to play their best baseball of the season if they want to overthrow the Aztecs. akudiyachronicle.utah.edu an 4th place finishes at the Mountain West Conference Championships. two-tim- all-sta- sixth at the Mountain West Conference Championships Feb. 23. Jameson came off an unbelievable cross country season, and will attempt to finish off his career at Utah on an unbelievable note.
